Standing in the gravel lot next to the charred remains of the Columbus Karma Thegsum Choling meditation center on Thursday, Tom Broadwater asked the more than 100 supporters who had gathered to visualize the person who set fire to the Buddhist temple over the weekend.
Then, while noting that it might be difficult, he asked them to love and pray for the unknown arsonist.
"No arsonist's torch can ever harm us. What will hurt us on this journey is hatred, and let's throw that into the fire of love and compassion," said Broadwater, who serves as a lama or teacher at the center.
"We are not defeated by fire. It's a sign of hope and renewal. And we will rebuild."
