An interesting part of our history. Tom Hanks is a terrific actor.

But I think the actor who stole the show was Mark Rylance, the English actor who portrayed Rudolf Abel---the Russian spy that Hanks' character was trying to swap for the imprisoned American pilot.

I also think that Spielberg should be using the Coen brothers in his future productions---their re-write of the script made for a sharper, more intelligent final result, free of the excess sentimentality that Spielberg is prone to use. Excellent movie, glad you enjoyed it.

As historically true stories go, it was extremely well done. Period feeling and style. And it had those resonating undercurrent of what goes on today.

I knew one of the guys instrumental in getting him out, an Air Force pilot.

Hanks grimaced too much. Wife acted flaky. Rylance was perfect - fell in love with him and cried over him. Hanks' son was totally unbelievable - no child studied nuclear war like he did - none.

My take was that there wasn't enough plot substance. Short on plot and they expanded it out to fill a whole movie. Surely they could have added more meat to it.

Agree Paladin - it did make America look good - but then - what about all those crazies who hit his house and sneered at him on train? It's like - if you have leaders who do the right thing - then maybe eventually the people will follow?

That reunion scene on the front porch with his wife looked like it was shot in July. Wtf?

A minor quibble. It was enjoyable and informative entertainment. Plus any film that can somehow work an adagio from a Shostakovich piano concerto into the mix gets major props from me. Sad that Donavan died so young of a heart attack (early 50's in 1970) and Powers not much later (1977) in a weather helicopter accident.

It's been on my list for awhile. It looks like it was in Korea in November and I missed it. My guess is it was here for two weeks and then gone.

I'm getting a little tired of Tom Hanks.

He's the English actor who plays the Russian spy they use to get our U-2 pilot back. Pitch-perfect example of restrained, effective acting; if he doesn't take Best Supporting Actor, I'll be really disappointed......

His performance in Wolf Hall was superb, incredible.

Decent enough actor, although I think he's overrated.
I think he's smug and obnoxious in interviews.

All I could think was: how would a lawyer defending a spy fare today? How much would he be harassed, on social media, on talk radio? His family?

Highly recommend.

Tom Hanks was very good.
