Bernie Sanders

Anyone else blown away by these numbers? I have to admit it's quite impressive.
It certainly looks like a revolution is about to happen. And just before Iowa!!!
His polling numbers in IA and NH just spiked again, too.
It's just unbelievable what I am witnessing.
NEVER, EVER GIVE UP. NEVER!!!!
Bernie plays a very, very good game, and I firmly believe he will be our next president.

(50,986 posts)Garfunkel song and understand the notion of personal quest embedded in national experience.
"They've all come to look for America."
That search is ongoing. And still in need of explorers. Sanders' campaign ad taps into that urgency, that opening.
There might be some younger folks who might never have heard that song and may be hearing it for the first time. May it enjoin them in the search for their country.

It touched him and i barely got him to watch it, he wants nothing to do with this country he has given up.

Net favorability is considered with emphasis in this piece. Bernie's net favorability is reported as astronomically high.

(631 posts)This is an ad that Hillary simply cannot make. She simply doesn't energize, nor does her vision inspire the curiosity of possibilities.

This is the antithesis of the scowling greedy individualists who say, "I got mine! I don't care about you and yours!"
In this ad, people care about each other and they all have each other's back. In this ad, they start out questioning, then hopeful, and then, with the girl in the Bernie t-shirt slapping hands of the people in line, joy breaks out and it remains, with the wide shots of the crowds showing how many joyous people are on Bernie's side, on your side!
Nothing fearful, nothing threatening. This shows a growing group of people increasingly joining a progressive cause, increasingly aware of their innate affection for each other, and delighted to have YOU join them as well!
And Bernie's welcoming smile at the end is directed towards the crowds and to all viewers.
The music swells very effectively and there is deep camaraderie shown.
In his book, "The Righteous Mind," Jonathan Haidt talks about the belonging that can occur in large crowds, with people moving and singing together. That is happening here and teaches the joy of working together for each other and for grand causes.
Wonderful ad!!!
Go Bernie!

Good, who had worked for Pixar for more than 20 years, said that movies at the very bottom convey an emotion, and if they don't convey an emotion, then the technical word to describe them is "boring." He said, "Well, you can teach other things in the movie itself, but you have to convey emotion."
Good had a variety of other very interesting observations -- e.g., in many ways, one can think of movies "as songs for the eyes."
In thinking about Bernie's ad a bit more in the last several hours, I believe that the bottom question the ad answers is this: "Who do you really trust with your future, with your family's future?" The movie establishes deep trust in Bernie, I think.

(631 posts)You've certainly captured the growing momentum in this wonderful ad.
My wife and I were fortunate to see PBO's last campaign speech before he became President in '08. We stood alongside nearly a million people in a cornfield of Manassas, Va. for over 8 hours. (He was late because his grandmother had just passed away.) It didn't matter because we felt like a big happy family. Not perfect, full of faults and differences, but hopeful for our future nonetheless.
Bernie makes us feel that way.
Akamai
(1,779 posts)so terrible -- no emotional buy-in.)
But with Bernie, we have a huge emotional buy-in, to this honest, thoughtful, wonderfully direct person who is working for all of us!
When you take the ego, the triviality, etc., out of a great politician, I think then you have Bernie.
Go, Bernie!

People may prefer the peaceful imagery of Bernie Sanders' ad.

(20,192 posts)As well as images of pollution and war planes. Commercials work in different ways, including subliminal. That commercial leaves a jumbled mess in your head of Hillary looking grim, pollution, war, 9/11, Trump, etc. Sure, there are some positive images, but our brains tend to remember negatives more. It's part of our survival mechanism.

(57,936 posts)Bernie's approach is, "I need your help to change things." (I'm paraphrasing.)
People saw with Obama how little even a great president can do on his own. We are very aware that to get anything done, we are going to need a movement.
Also, Hillary talks about growing the economy. She doesn't talk about disparity in wealth and income so much. Americans are wary of her approach. We have a growing economy. The technology that has been introduced into our economy has provided potential for growth beyond belief. But because of the disparity in incomes and wealth and the flow of so much wealth to the top 1% or so, there is not enough demand for the new technology to really permit the growth to be broadly enjoyed.
It's great that supermarkets can have computer check-out stands. But if you lose your job as a cashier to one of those stands, you may have to find a minimum wage job to replace your lost job or maybe get no job at all and have to rely on food stamps. Either way, your grocery purchases are likely to be more modest than they would be if you still had the cashier's job.
Hillary does not explain how increased growth in our economy will actually help the middle class. I don't think she thinks about it that much.
She assumes that the problem in our economy is too little growth. It's actually something more complex -- and trade agreements like NAFTA that have resulted in the transfer of American jobs to other countries and the import of goods to our country are a big part of the problem. That's a topic she really doesn't touch on that much. After all her husband signed NAFTA.

But Americans are so endlessly told to be scared.
In poll after poll Hillary's strength is her supposed expertise in handling terrorism and her tougher stance on guns.
If either
- people pointed out that Hillary is in the pocket of Saudi Arabia, a massive state sponsor of terror, or
- Hillary's not even capable of making sound decisions about her email security much less national security
That lead could evaporate.
Alternatively Americans could stop being so scared of terrorism.
