(14,691 posts)Larry David. It was my first time watching him and quite possibly my last.

(7,499 posts)That's exactly what I thought. There were so many dog whistles in the two skits about Bernie. I was fuming. The skit with Hill as the bartender was so much lighter and clever. Tonight's show was a subtle hatchet job.

(25,252 posts)income inequality. Us 99%er's are the poor schmuck's and the 1%er's are the rich prick's.
Subtle and subliminal - but effective.

(45,251 posts)I was not paying close attention--the schmuck was as big a prick as the rich prick. (I don't even like using those words, but I am paraphrasing David.)
I don't think I should post anything more about it because I did not pay close attention.

(45,251 posts)Who used to be a nasty poor schmuck?
LiberalElite
(14,691 posts)he was talking about himself. Maybe I just don't get the guy. I never watched him before.

(45,251 posts)I thought he was doing an impression of Sanders. I was not paying close attention.
Oh, dear. I may owe him and his fans, esp. his DU fans an apology. I didn't find the routine funny, but insulting himself is his business and not offensive.
If David was not doing a Sanders' impression when he used the rich prick schtick, I am so very sorry everyone!

(23,548 posts)Larry and Bernie are from the same part of NYC they sound the same. But, they aren't the same person.
Larry was totally making fun of himself being a jerk whether he is rich or poor. I was amused.

(45,251 posts)As I said, I assumed he was doing his impression of Sanders, which he has done a lot late. I did not assume he was the same person as Sanders, but thanks for that info.

(23,548 posts)just like Larry David.
BTW Curb Your Enthusiasm is just like that campaign sketch. Larry's character is always caught in situations where he is in a combination of being misunderstood and being a real jerk and in the end they bring in something that happened earlier that you forgot about and it all ties together and Larry suffers more.
I could see how Bernie supporters who don't like Larry David or have never seen his show would hate that campaign sketch. I think it was awesome.

(45,251 posts)I am sometimes the captive of a friend who thinks it's hilarious. I did love Seinfeld, if that's any comfort.
MissDeeds
(7,499 posts)but I didn't like the skits.
First, Bernie the candidate surrounded by Black supporters refused to shake the hand of a Black woman who had just coughed in her hand. Had it been a white or multicultural crowd I wouldn't have taken exception, but this just floats out the nonsense that Bernie doesn't connect with or relate to POC.
The Titanic skit seemed to focus on Bernie being Jewish from a family of immigrants.
It just seemed a bit heavy handed compared to the lighthearted skit SNL did with Hillary as the bartender.
merrily
(45,251 posts)I did not like it. I didn't really enjoy anything David did, but assumed the rest of the show was written by the SNL writers, not David, so I didn't blame him.
MissDeeds
(7,499 posts)I just thought whoever wrote the skits didn't do Bernie any favors. Hillary fared much better.

(3,366 posts)In Curb Your Enthusiasm, he always refuses to shake hands with people who cough/sneeze/blow their nose, then offer their hand. Everyone in that skit was playing someone from CYE. I can see where it would be confusing if you're not familiar with CYE.
MissDeeds
(7,499 posts)I haven't watched CYE, so I was out of the loop.

(41,143 posts)Bernie is traveling to America and what's his face is the capt. I guess. Cute skit and Bernie was good, and funny. Larry David's gift as an actor eludes me.
