Here is another weather-vaner from Hillary
In Thursday nights Democratic debate, Hillary Clinton defended her past statements that Central American migrant children needed to be sent home from the border to send a message to other families: Dont come.
Wrong answer which Bernie Sanders immediately pointed out.
Who are you sending a message to? he said, reminding her that mothers and children were fleeing Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala to avoid being murdered. I dont think we use them to send a message. I think we welcome them into this country and do the best we can to help them get their lives together.
Over the years, Mrs. Clinton has shown an unfortunate tendency to oscillate between harshness and compassion on immigration questions. She seems to reach instinctively for the tougher-sounding policy before coming around, eventually, to positions that more closely reflect American ideals of welcome ideals that Mr. Sanders voiced fluently on Thursday night.

(6,409 posts)The Times adheres to the custom of not allowing people to use titles of offices they no longer hold. Only a former president is entitled to be addressed as "Mister President" or "Madam President." (thinking nine years ahead here) Former governors, senators, mayors, city council members, sewer and water commissioners, etc. revert to Mr. or Ms. or Mrs. when they leave office. The NY Times goes even further, using Mrs. Clinton because she uses her husband's family name. If she went by Hillary Rodham, I think they would call her Ms. Rodham, or maybe Miss Rodham. Somebody else here might know, since they publish a style book for journalists, and it can be found in just about every newspaper in the country.
Anyway, her campaign doesn't like Mrs. Clinton because they feel it diminishes her accomplishments and implies she is riding on her husband's reputation.

(6,409 posts)Not very nuanced, to say the least. I'm sure Clinton doesn't want to prevent people from seeking asylum, but the "turn them back at the border" thing makes me wonder what asylum seekers are supposed to do.
