I'm guessing someone within the Clinton campaign pointed him to the edited archives of the photo and ran with without any knowledge of the edit history.

Now he does not want to reveal the source of his story is from within the Clinton campaign. It would look exactly like the hit job it is and put blame in the one place he does not want it to go.

He may have to in order to save his career though.

But he can retract and apologize without revealing that info. He just keeps on keepin' on though. Like a stubborn child.
