(14,733 posts)Obviously, I'd prefer to see him be the one at 49%, but it's a darned strong showing, and yet another indication that we still stand a chance of upsetting those who see the primary as having a pro forma outcome, and Bernie's place as being merely to provide some sort of 'foil' to the inevitable 'real' candidate.

(5,069 posts)Clinton has been a de facto candidate since the 1990's - here we have Bernie who did not until recently even have name recognition within the state of Vermont let alone outside of New England. To my knowledge, he has yet to visit Wisconsin....

(13,340 posts)Polls are not an exact science, of course, but the better ones tend to do fairly well, and allow for fairly accurate predictions.
Of course, we're a a long way from any meaningful vote, but if you're pinning your hopes for Bernie on polls all being full of crap....
Well, just prepare to be disappointed is all I'm saying.
Having said that, I would LOVE for the primary to be legitimately contested.

(11,564 posts)I long thought of Bernie Sanders as a sort of lone voice, calling in the wilderness. And I really admired him for it.
Given the absolutely insane nature of RW politics these days, and how many people seem to buy into it so fervently, it is beyond heartening to see such an incredible amount of support for a man who might have been written off as a fringe curiosity not that long ago.
Funny thing. His values turn out to be the values that vast numbers of people didn't realize they had in common until they had cause to examine them.
Erich Bloodaxe BSN
(14,733 posts)We've had self-fulfilling prophecies about 'having to' elect blue dogs and conservodems for decades, because the voting public has been subtly propagandized to believe that we cannot 'win' by electing Democrats who actually stand strongly for ALL Democratic values and constituencies. That we 'have' to accept those candidates who only care about some principles, but are Republican on many more issues, because they're the only 'electable' ones. That Democrats who believe in ALL Democratic values are 'fringe' or 'voices in the wilderness'.
It's not a matter of accident, but design. And it's carefully done enough that it creates a legion of Stockholm syndrome footsoldiers, who will defend the idea that we can only 'win' electorally by accepting the worst possible candidates, the ones who agree with Republicans on the most issues, the farthest right ones, and believe they're doing the 'right' thing because those candidates are willing to support them on matters that don't 'pick the pockets' of the people who designed the propaganda campaign in the first place.

(7,865 posts)They are the latest incarnation of the blue dog/DLC mindstate seeking to make Democrats subordinate to corporate power.
Conservatives nut jobs will call anyone with a D next to their name a communist.. Basing your candidate choices on that is foolish.
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)era. I admit that I fell for it, sort of also as the main goal back then was to defeat Republicans. Many reluctantly held their noses to elect Conservo Dems in order to 'win'.
We did that, and then realized that what we got were a few crumbs, but on the main issues, Forever War, no accountability for War Criminals and Wall St criminals, or even much of a change in the policies of those criminals. Maybe it was necessary to actually see the results of buying into 'winning at any cost' before the real changes that are necessary could begin to happen.
Bernie Sanders back then, could not have had the success he is now achieving imo.
But with so many disillusioned voters he is a breath of fresh air. The time for people who DID vote the right way back then, against the Iraq War, against the Patriot Act eg, when it was considered almost an act of Treason, has now come.

(14,177 posts)I spent about 6 months in Wisconsin back in the early 80's, I loved it there. It's a beautiful state and I spent a lot of time in Madison, besides the Twin Cities area it's my favorite place in the world. I don't want to see Wisconsin become another Michigan that would be tragic. Plus I want to move there when I retire.

(1,370 posts)Bernie's speaking the same truth to power as a candidate for President as he has his whole political career. He doesn't need 247 consultants to tell him what issues to focus on, what accent to use or how to convince voters he has their backs. He doesn't need to worry about offending Wall Street or the military contractors because he isn't taking their money... Bernie's free swing away!!!
I can't wait for the debates...

(8,513 posts)Then there is also this blogger questioning that as well as other issues in this chair's race including her corporate investments and background and the Republican-lite campaign she ran for 9th Senate last year, finishing far behind Mary Burke and far behind the Dem performance rating in her district.
http://political-heat.blogspot.com/2015/05/its-time-to-vet-martha-laning.html
Sure, there's been a lot of BS blog posts on the chair's race this spring, but the evidence, though scant, is there to be found.
Martha may turn out to be a fine chair. I just haven't seen any evidence of the highly-touted "progressive" vein so many think she has.
I am equally concerned about the ability of someone coming from a corporate environment trying to run a party organization that is basically a cooperative. It's goals, and in this case, bottom-up democratic "ownership" is anathema to those who have earned their stripes in the top-down corporate world. And since when is a corporate executive ever in charge of marketing and messaging? Something we desperately need.
I guess time will tell. I just struggle to find the enthusiasm.

(5,400 posts)This is the ongoing trend, the Sanders campaign has achieved significant momentum. Name recognition is following close on the heels of this, and helping to propel things along. The more people know, the better the campaign will do. And now that Sanders absolutely has earned recognition, people will learn more.
The inevitable scurrilous attacks are going to harm those dishing them out and help highlight the motives behind them.
The voters are primed for this true Progressive to campaign.

(8,513 posts)Just adding this to make it clear that this straw poll is hardly a complete survey of the party's core in Wisconsin.
Even so, as someone who is a party member and convention regular in WI, I am surprised to see Sander's finish this high even with a partial poll.
