Sanders Speaks at Brookland Baptist Church

PRESS RELEASE
Sanders Speaks at Brookland Baptist Church
FEBRUARY 21, 2016

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders confers with the Rev. Charles Jackson during an luncheon on Sunday at Brookland Baptist Church in Columbia, South Carolina.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders was the guest of the Rev. Charles Jackson at a lunch with Brookland Baptist Church members on Sunday.

“Sen. Sanders, we are so appreciative of you stopping by to see us today,” the pastor said before introducing the senator.

With Democratic voters headed to the polls here in just six days, Sanders told the congregation that “the country will be looking at South Carolina,” and added, “I’m here to ask your help to help lead this country to a political revolution in which ordinary people will be represented in Washington, not just a handful of wealthy campaign contributors.”

During brief remarks, Sanders touched on the economy and criminal justice reform.

Turning to civil rights and criminal justice, Sanders said the United States leads the world in the number of inmates behind bars. “We have in America today a broken criminal justice system. We should not be having more people in jail, largely African-American and Latino, than any other country on earth. We are going to invest in education and jobs, not more jails,” he said. Sanders’ criminal justice reform proposals include ensuring that police forces reflect the diversity of their communities, eliminating for-profit prisons, ending mandatory minimum sentencing and giving judges more leeway in sentencing.

Sanders was joined at the church by Rep. Terry Alexander from Florence, South Carolina. Alexander was among the earliest Sanders supporters in the Palmetto State. Also accompanying Sanders at the church was Ben Jealous, the former president of the NAACP and a prominent Sanders supporter.

I think "lukewarm" may be the word of the day. Let's see how may times it pops up in reference to this appearance. Every time Sanders says or does something, we hear the same adjective circulated around the interwebs. Where is Spiro Agnew when we need him? We need something that rises to the level of "effete intellectual" or "pusillanimous pussy footer."

Man, the establishment is scared.

Everywhere I went in South and North Carolina today with my Bernie stuff on, I was greeted with compliments and asked about the rally and how he was - all positive comments from every color, gender and age.

People seem to genuinely LIKE Bernie even if they don't agree with him. I was in hostile Republican territory most of my time there and didn't even get a sneer.

Sanders marched and was arrested in 1963 while protesting segregation and has a very full record of voting for equality. Clinton was a registered Rspublican in the 60s and in fact was a Goldwater girl working on his campagn which included segregation and repelling voter laws etc. So, I dont know anthing more recent about her record of helping other races since she became a Dem. Her husband has a good relationship but how solid is hers and why should I believe her? No attacks please, I would like real and true information.

I think this is largely because she helps black candidates gain elected office. Our party doesn't seem to be able to pass meaningful legislation that would help black citizens. In fact, we have tacitly and even actively participated in enacting some laws that hurt black people significantly. But we have been able to raise money, conduct voter registration drives, get out the vote, etc. on behalf of black candidates. If that seems inadequate, maybe it is, but perhaps we are prevented from doing more due to circumstances. Are those circumstances at least partly of our own making? I think so, but my party does not agree with me.

So, in your opinion is her relationship with politicians mutually beneficial since there seem to be nothing in her record for helping common folks?

It works for her, and it works for them. It benefits common folks to the extent it gives them better representation than they might otherwise have. But we're losing Democratic office holders at various levels of government, so I don't know how much longer we can continue being satisfied with this.

1)Racism
2)Militarism
3)Greed
?

I submit, without a moment's hesitation, that candidate is Bernie Sanders.
