Some highlights from Bernie in Greenville

Sorry I'm too tired to go into much detail - we had to make the three-hour drive back to Knoxville after the rally because of work and school tomorrow, but I will say we were on the front row, right in front of the podium.

After the rally, Bernie did his walk around, noticed the crowd crushing up, grabbed my 8-year-old daughter on the shoulders and told the crowd to "Back up! We have a little one up front!" So sweet.

Anyway, here are some sights and sounds:

Stump Speech

Just after he protected by daughter (that's her under him).

After he passed us.

Our vantage-point during the speech (how close!)

Hope y'all enjoy!

I am glad to see him campaigning vigorously. The longer we have a two-person race, the better it will be for registering voters, generating excitement and having a serious conversation about the future of the Democratic party.

Young, old, middle. Black, white, other PoC. Male and female. Hell, the women were more zealous than any of the Bernie Bros.

But, what is the news showing? The smallish clump of white guys to the right of me - not me, my daughter, the young women next to us, the black (and very smart and polite) Georgia Tech freshman (male) to my left and never the little old Asian woman who was screaming LOUDER than any of the dudes. She was fantastic. Came in passing out Bernie stickers of every variety. Wore little old lady clothes and shoes (including the stereotypical thick stockings). I mean, this woman ROCKED! She was probably in her 60s and kept up with all the kids surrounding her.

Bernie inspires every age, race and gender because he speaks for us while no one else has for the last 40 years.

6,000 is a great crowd! I hope he has a jaw dropping showing on Saturday!

Thanks again for the recap and pictures! It's wonderful to get feedback from people on the ground.

After we left the rally, we HAD to get something to eat before hitting the road. We'd only eaten a soft pretzel at the arena since breakfast and we were starved.

We stopped in at a Waffle House (my go-to travel eatery that I NEVER eat at unless I'm traveling) to grab a quick bite of stick-to-your-ribs food to replenish us for our drive home. We were covered in Bernie paraphernalia - shirts, buttons, stickers, etc. and this young black waitress SCREAMED with delight and ran over to us yelling, "My Boy Bernie! You made my night! I couldn't go because I had to work," and so forth. I tipped her generously.

The older black cook shook his head as if in disapproval. He made a disparaging comment I couldn't quite make out, but got the feeling he was for the other candidate. Ahem.

It's quite telling in just that small microcosm of that restaurant the divide in the black vote based on age.

as to why he favors Hillary. What has she done for people of color that they would be considered her natural constituency? Bernie was in the Civil Rights movement when she was a Goldwater girl. Haven't yet heard a good explanation.

I'm sure you did.

BTW - How did you like Greenville? The liberals and arts crowd there have really done a great job countering the heavy-weight of the neanderthal Bob Jonesers, imo.

Awesome pics.

Of all the concerts I've been to, only 2 where I had 5th and 3rd row seats.

5th row for Genesis.

3rd row for Emerson Lake And Palmer.

Nonetheless, an achievement to be that close to Bernie.

And there are none of those excited crowds at the gated estate soirees!

Thanks for all this news about the evening. How exciting!

And how typical Bernie to notice and protect a child.

Wouldn't you just love to be a fly on the wall when the Secret Service operatives compare and contrast Bernie and Hillary?

The detail assigned to Bernie are VERY NICE and outgoing. You expect them to be stiff and hard-nosed, but his agents, while obviously intense and taking detail of the surroundings were jovial and kind.

I have some medical issues that sometimes make me have to, ahem, use the restroom often and I have an 8 year old. The arena wasn't open, but one really sweet SS guy had a female SS member escort us to the bathroom before it opened. You know why? I had stopped him before and talked with him. He said he'd been in SC for two weeks setting up this visit. I thanked him with a smile for protecting our guy.

So, when it was time I needed a favor, he was very happy to help.

Later, the guy patrolling the stage (a different person) had walked by us several times and didn't look at ALL approachable. VERY SERIOUS, but one of the other young women from Knoxville (we'd met and kind of "glommed" together) had dropped her placard over the dividing fence. She politely asked him to hand it to her and his tough veneer broke. He smiled brightly and bent over to pick it up for her.

Bernie also has many female SS agents in his detail. After he told the crowd to push back, one of the women came over to my daughter (after hearing her boss's instructions, I assume) and continued to make the crowd stand back.

Overall, I got the feeling they very much liked working for Bernie. Either that, or the Secret Service has undergone "friendly" training since the last time I dealt with them as a reporter. LOL!

I've never read anything positive about how Hillary treated the Secret Service in her WH years.

One of many examples, but relevant as to the agent who helped you/ your daughter and restroom:

Hillary one day ran into a White House electrician who was changing a light bulb in the upstairs family quarters. She screamed at him, because she had demanded that all repairs be performed while the Clintons were outside the Executive Mansion. “She caught the guy on a ladder doing the light bulb,” says Franette McCulloch, who served at that time as assistant White House pastry chef. “He was a basket case.”

White House usher Christopher B. Emery unwisely called back Barbara Bush after she phoned him for computer troubleshooting. Emery helped the former first lady twice. Consequently, Kessler reports, Hillary sacked him. The father of four stayed jobless for a year.

While running for US Senate, Hillary stopped at an upstate New York 4-H Club. As one Secret Service agent says, Hillary saw farmers and cows and then erupted. “She turned to a staffer and said, ‘What the f - - - did we come here for? There’s no money here.’?”

And EVERYONE just calls him "Bernie." LOL. Not Sanders or Senator... just Bernie.

most of the 'establishment' Dems I know and have worked with over a decade have been using their 'establishment' experience to work for Sanders campaign. Sanders NC chair was the party chair here during 2012 election cycle and that experience is being applied to efforts for Sanders. Some here don't seem to appreciate it when I express that simple truth, that Sanders also benefits from the experience of the many DNC 'establishment' workers, too. I'm glad you saw some of that widespread support when you traveled through. You bump into Sanders voters everywhere in my part of the Carolinas. ; )
