Registered independents marginally out number registered Republicans, who make up 34.75 percent, while Democrats trail at 29.54 percent. Four years ago, independents accounted for 31.23 percent, Democrats 31.9 percent and Republicans 36.0 percent of voters in the state.

Johnson and his "collective group of true believers" are also closely following a New Jersey lawsuit that challenges the use of public funds to pay for partisan primaries, a practice Arizona follows. Johnson, a former Democrat-turned-independent, said using taxpayer dollars for elections that serve private parties strikes him as a violation of the state Constitution's Gift Clause, which prohibits spending public dollars for private endeavors.
