By this late stage in the primary process, the race has usually started to wind down; the favourite candidate pulling ahead. But this time on Democratic side, the critical contests are just beginning.

Hillary Clinton has been eager to pivot her focus to the general election, aiming her attacks at Donald Trump, the Republican front runner, in an implicit message that she believes the Democratic nomination is already hers.

The former secretary of state's delegate count is significantly bolstered by "super delegates" - the party officials and establishment figures who have a powerful sway on the ultimate result. Thus far an overwhelming majority of the available super delegates, some 712, have chosen to back Mrs Clinton. But if Mr Sanders were to keep winning so much of the popular vote, the super delegates would come under intense pressure to switch sides.

Even if he does not manage to steal the nomination from Mrs Clinton, Mr Sanders' success so late in the campaign is an embarrassment for the former first lady. Her failure to command the election when running against an outsider candidate, raises questions about her ability to win in a national campaign.
