Why the Attacks on Jane Feel so Personal

Even though I hate it my husband just can't seem to give up on MSNBC but it was okay last night because we watch Jane on Rachel Maddow. She was charming and real and I turned to my husband and I said she looks so normal. She could be someone in my family, an aunt, a mother, a sister. Sure she's not as glamorous as the stunning Michelle but she is one of us, one of the 99%.

She's got a little gray in her hair, clean but not stylish. Dresses neatly but not trendy or ostentatiously. Not plastered with makeup or botox and carrying a few extra pounds. I think every American family has a Jane. She is usually fun, kind, quick with a laugh or a shoulder to cry on. She is there for you in good times and bad. She is your auntie, your mother, your sister. She will be me in a few years.

So the attacks upon this extraordinary woman who is so much more than her looks or age appalled me, they hit close to the bone.
This is the article that I read: http://www.democraticunderground.com/12511682634 --thanks Georgia Peanuts
She is smart and kind and I know that the person she is she will put on a brave face but attacks like this hurt. They are a chill wind that find there way under the chinks in our amour. To be attacked on that because you don't support her husband is disgusting beyond belief.

It's hard to grow old in our society. I used to be thin, fashionable and turned heads. But the middle aged spread seems to have won the war and the gray hairs grow thicker every year. I grow more invisible every year. It's hard and I am not half the woman Jane is. I know that for her none of that is real important but I still think it's got to be so painful to have your looks disparaged because you dared to speak for your husband. You dared to come out of the shadows as a woman of a certain age but with ideas and opinions of your own. She is incredibly brave, she didn't ask for this but she is there every step of the way. It breaks my heart that this woman might shed tears over this. I hope that she knows that she is loved as well. That there are millions of women just like her or millions more who know and love women just like her who admire who she is. I will be honored to have her as our First Lady.

I could not see these attacks coming from the HRC crew, it seems it has to be others doing it. I was upset by the cankles joke Triumph did about Hillary and I love the comedian. These comments just seem so shallow and disgustingly sexist. The people making these attacks will feel a deep shame for years once they realize how tasteless and crude they are.

P.S. some of these are the types of tweets that get people fired from their jobs, I wonder if we will hear about that in the news next week.

Or they would not speak so. Comments like these insult every woman who is like Jane. I have many women in my family who remind me of Jane, my husbands family too. This insults them all, makes them all seem less then because they aren't 20 yr old models. I hate this materialistic culture that applauds this.

It is unbelievable that they would do it, guy's don't get that cr@p, it is beyond sexiest. It is another "I don't think he is a Muslim" moment...which is horrible in its own way. I won't even comment on her looks to defend, if is none of my business, it is only what a person does that matters. I have been a viper to anyone one that said anything about Hillary's looks...basically when I think I cne't get more let down by these people, boom here I go again.

The people doing this are worse than Trump and Cruz put together. Didn't we just go through something similar with them? If Hillary Clinton had any principles she would apologize for this action and ask that it stop immediately.

Made something trend on twitter that was a personal attack like this on any Clinton or surrogate. They get trending on twitter for policy disagreements... This is just disgusting mean schoolyard bully language.

Every time I see Jane and hear her speak she is so genuine and amazing and fills me with such positive energy. She is one of those kind-hearted souls that would never say anything mean-spirited about anybody.

Yes Michelle is quite the fashionista but she had more than her share of hateful remarks as did Hillary as first lady. Shame an all who dare to go there. No heart.

And you are exactly right, Michelle has been denigrated, Hillary, even Chelsea when they were in the White House. I remember in the 70s when Jimmy Carters daughter was fair game. It never seems to end. I would like to see it end. Don't read the link, its ugly and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. But you know what makes me smile, thoughts of Jane at the Vatican.

she is someone that is real, someone that I'd want to be friends with. She reminds me of some of my friends. I am in that age group too.
She's so down to earth, so soft spoken, and sweet. And intelligent. I like that she doesn't wear fancy clothes or wears a lot of makeup.

Our society is so fixated on shiny objects that many have forgotten how to appreciate what is real.
Jane is real, and she touched me. I find myself admiring her so much.
It's a different type of admiration than I have for Michelle. Michelle is amazing, brilliant & stunning, she is a rock star.

But so is Jane, just in a different way. In a very relatable way.

That relateability. You are so right on Jane's appeal and Bernie's for that matter. No shiny objects for them, just truth and lots of it wrapped in love and hope. I think that is why they are resonating. Our world has become so fake that their very realness is like a breath of fresh air.

This whole thing makes me think of what happened with Carrie Fisher in the Force Awakens. Now I am a Star Wars fan, loved the original series, loved me some Princess Leia, saw them all in the theaters the first time around. She came back and was just ripped to shreds because she had the temerity to grow old. How dare she not be 21 and able to sashay around in her gold bikini. Never mind that she has become a respected author, comedian, mental illness survivor and all around interesting person. It was just... EWW shes old and fat. God I want that to stop.

Jane for me represents all the wonderful women in my life. She ist that teacher I had in the 2nd grade who I loved so much I never forgot her even 40 years later. She is that unexpected friend that was quietly there for me when I needed someone to just listen. She is my Aunt who helped raise me when my mother had to work two jobs to make enough money to keep my brother and I fed. She is the quiet strength of women in all our everyday guises. She will never SPARKLE in the way that Jackie or Michelle does, but she doesn't need to. What she is is enough.

like Jane as FLOTUS. What a great message for real women. You don't have to be Jackie O to be the first lady.

But it's more than that. From what I've read her & Bernie are a team. When he was Mayor, her desk was next to his.
She may be the first FLOTUS to have her desk in close proximity to the POTUS. That would be amazing!

real feminism makes room for all women to feel free to be themselves, and thus raising and encouraging everyone else to do the same. Free strong and ethical women give birth to a healthy society.

Michelle Obama has been a joy to have in the WH, she certainly broke the stuffy mold on the FLOTUS for all time.
