New York race may be tighter than expected for Democrats

Leading Democrats privately predict that Hillary Clinton will win a closer-than-originally-expected victory over Bernie Sanders in the April 19 primary — but they’re also conceding that “Clinton exhaustion” could produce a surprise upset.

“The feeling is that Hillary is kind of like Spencer Tracy running one last race in ‘The Last Hurrah.’ It’s like, ‘Here we go again,’ the same Hillary and Bill show that’s been going on for 24 years,’’ a top state Democrat who knows the Clintons well told The Post over the weekend.

“There’s a shelf life, nobody lasts for ever, and add to that that Hillary seems shrill at times and is grovelling in changing some of her positions to the left in order to head off Sanders, and you can see why people feel the way they do,’’ he continued.

The source said that while most Democratic officials “think Hillary is going to win’’ a tight victory, he also cautioned that, “We all talk to each other, and it’s very possible that if there’s a wave coming for Bernie that we don’t see it and it could sweep Hillary away.’’

Other Democrats echoed the source’s statements, with one saying, “Everyone is being mobilized, everybody is working hard for Hillary, but everybody is kind of up there in age and there’s a sense of ‘Clinton exhaustion,’ plus we keep seeing all these young people out there working for Bernie.’’

All the state’s leading Democrats have endorsed Clinton — but Gov. Cuomo, as the de facto head of the state party, has the most riding on the outcome, party insiders agree.

“Andrew is in a funny spot: he’s the leader of the party, and as such he’s got to at least look like he’s doing everything to help Hillary — yet his own ambition [to run for President] leads everyone to think he’d like to see her lose,’’ said a Democratic operative who knows Cuomo well.

“If Sanders was to win, or even come close to Hillary, that will be a hell of a black eye for Cuomo and New York Democrats generally, and it would leave people wondering if maybe the governor could have done more to help,’’ the operative continued.

Cuomo may actually be a hindrance to Clinton, who found herself unexpectedly booed at a New York State United Teachers gathering Friday when she praised the governor, who has tense relations with the state’s teachers unions.

As young people will have to live in the world they sell off to the various cartels they need to consider the illegitimacy of this "last hurrah" of theirs on moral grounds.

It's sexist, and there are lots of words for conveying an obnoxious demeanor.

Why don't they just say DWS, Howard Dean, et al. Or, "Establishment Democrats" would be more accurate.

It pisses me off to see stories like this that don't use attribution when it's required. If you don't have it, drop the whole paragraph.

ON Edit: And if this race is that close as this piece indicates, then what they are saying is Hillary is wetting her pants at the thought she could lose this state and Bernie could win it.

I would like to think that New York has gone through an awakening process and is tired of Hillary and Bill.

have to "at least look like he’s doing everything to help Hillary"? This is a Democratic primary. It's not like she's running against the opposition party.

Senior state Democrats who have known Cuomo for decades told The Post that a speech in Buffalo last week was proof positive that the governor, once widely described as a political centrist, is seeking to use his Bernie Sanders-like “progressive’’ agenda of the nation’s highest minimum wage and a costly family leave mandate as a springboard to the presidency.

Cuomo, in a fiery speech to Democratic officials and union activists, claimed his plans for a $15-an-hour minimum wage and a family leave requirement were badly needed reforms the entire nation should emulate.

“It’s not just a New York agenda; this is a national agenda,’’ declared Cuomo.

“We want to get this done in New York for New York, but then we are going to take this justice agenda, this fairness agenda, and we are going to say to this nation, ‘We did it in New York. You can do it anywhere in this country,’?’’ Cuomo said.

Cuomo also linked his proposals to the bipartisan anger over the nation’s economic conditions that has marked both the Sanders and Donald Trump campaigns, insisting, “When you see people talking about the anger all across the country, that is why people are angry.

“And by the way, they should be angry and you should be angry,’’ he said.

A source with strong ties to Cuomo’s inner circle outlined to The Post the game plan he said the governor already has under way.

“Hillary may not implode, but if she does, Andrew is already making course corrections to position himself more favorably to the national Democrats in light of the rapid leftward turn of the grass roots,’’ said the source.

“Andrew is to the left of Sanders on guns, will have done a $15 minimum wage and paid family leave, he’s banned fracking — his total transformation from centrist to ‘a leftist that actually gets things done’ will be complete just in time for the beginning of the next presidential cycle,’’ the source, a prominent Democrat, continued.

In addition, one of the state’s best-known Democratic activists and party leaders told The Post Cuomo’s “ideal scenario’’ for a 2020 run was having Sanders as the Democratic nominee, only to lose in November, or to have a flawed Hillary Clinton lose in the general election as well.

“Andrew wants to come into the presidential race that will take place four years from now, which is why he is willing to shift to the left so dramatically on his prior agenda,’’ the activist said.

“Before he shifted, his strategy was about making New York competitive. Now it is about making Andrew Cuomo competitive in 2020.”

I think it's pretty much been so fucking rigged that there is no way Bernie can win either. Everyone has got their nose so far up the Clinton's asses both in NY and nationally that they can make it look close, but still like she won fair (and we know that isn't true).
