Closed vs Open Primaries

Here in California we have an open primary.

That is independents can vote in the Democratic Primary (not Republicans).

For this election cycle open primaries benefit Sanders.
Is there a down side to having open primaries rather than closed?

Where I live Independents in the Primary can choose an R ballot or a D ballot.

I chose the Democratic ballot and cast my vote for Bernie and other down ticket Dems.

Far rightwingnutz party.

I see the confusion.
I think registering "no party preference" is what allows you in California. No affiliation.

Our screwed up system seems to be set up to confuse people and limit democracy.
