After speaking to a packed house at Heritage Hall in Lexington on Wednesday night, Bernie Sanders apparently was feelin the burn of hunger.
The Democratic presidential candidate stopped by the Graeters Ice Cream store on Euclid Avenue with his wife, Jane.
Bernie Sanders and his wife, Jane, waiting in line while customers at the Euclid Graeters Ice Cream store took photos.
He came to our Chevy Chase store at the end of the night, manager Colleen Jones said. We didnt get much notice. His people called, and he was there very shortly after that. He came in and got some ice cream with his people.
So, what did Sanders order?
The report is that he got two scoops, double chocolate chip, in a cup, Jones said.
No hot fudge or whipped cream? (Graeters is known for both.)
He probably was dressed up, she said.
His wife, Jane Sanders, got a single scoop of regular chocolate chip.
How did the Vermont senator (supported by Ben & Jerrys co-founder Ben Cohen, who created the Bernies Yearning 99 percent vanilla with a 1 percent chocolate disk just for Sanders) hear about Cincinnati-based Graeters?
Im sure one of his people knew about Graeters and said you should check this out, Jones said. He got coffee at Heine Brothers in Louisville, too.
Jones said that at the time, the only people working were University of Kentucky students. They all took pictures with Sanders, who apparently waited in line like everyone else. Many of the late-night ice cream customers also were UK students, apparently.
He loves meeting with college students, Jones said.
Danielle Moulton, 20, of Lexington, was the manager on duty when a man in a suit asked to speak with her Wednesday night.
She thought it was going to be a complaint. Instead, he told her Sanders was going to stop by.
We couldnt say anything to anyone. We are preparing we like tried to clean up the store as much as we could, but the store was already packed, Moulton said. Then she saw the men in suits on the street. And I though, oh my gosh, this is real.
And drawing a lot of attention: Across the street in Chevy Chase Inn, Lucy Jones was meeting a friend and they noticed what we realized was a mounting Secret Service presence and I said I wonder if thats Bernie.
And saw that little telltale tuft of unruly white hair. And I said yep, thats him, Jones said. She went across and got there in time snap a photo of Sanders about to dive into his ice cream.
I took a picture, and felt terrible because I was treating him like an alien being. So I walked over, introduced myself, and thanked him for all hes doing for our country, said Jones, who said she is a Democrat but hasnt decided who to vote for.

I remember him from South Carolina.
Looks like he's getting some ice cream, too. I don't think I've ever seen the Secret Service eating with their charge.
