Race organizers fear Bernie Sanders' Scranton rally will snarl Steamtown Marathon plans

If you're thinking about hitting U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders' rally in Scranton on Saturday, leave early.

As The Times-Tribune reports, Sanders' 10:30 a.m. rally at Scranton High School will conflict with several other events, notably this year's Steamtown Marathon Exposition, which is expected to attract thousands of runners from 40 states.

Not only that, the high school will play host to WNEP-TV's Ryan's Run charity 5K, and a Scranton Prep football game.

The presence of Sanders, who's campaigning for Hillary Clinton and Senate candidate Katie McGinty, has race organizers concerned, the newspaper reported.

"I'm concerned about the health, safety and welfare of everyone involved there," said race director Bill King told the newspaper "It's going to be a logistical nightmare for everyone involved."

Race organizers have had the high school's cafeteria, auxiliary gymnasium and main hallway reserved for months for the expo, which runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the newspaper reported.

According to the Times-Tribune, Sanders' rally was planned for Courthouse Square, but was moved to the high school because of a rain forecast. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. for the event co-sponsored by the Scranton Federation of Teachers and the Pennsylvania State Education Association.
