Bernie actually LISTENED to the BLM/NetRoots disrupters, and within a few hours

He rocks the house in Phoenix before 11,000+ peeps, including many AAs and Latinos, with this;

"And like everybody in this room, I want to see an America where when young black men walk down the street they will not be harassed by police officers, they will not be killed; they will not be shot!" (Standing Ovation)

"To his credit, President Obama did something extraordinary the other day, he had the courage to go to a federal jail and talk about the absurdity of a criminal justice system in which if we don't change it 1 out of 4 male African Americans born today will end up behind bars. That is NOT the America we believe in."

"And that's why we believe it makes more sense to invest in jobs and education, not jails and incarceration!"

"And to our 11 million brothers and sisters who are living in the shadows today, we say loudly and we say clearly we are going to bring you out of the shadows and on a path toward citizenship. And we're not going to divide families up, brothers and sisters... we are the wealthiest nation in the world, there is nothing we cannot accomplish."

That's my candidate! Thank you Bernie for actually listening and responding to BLM's passion and adroitly addressing the epidemic of black being murdered by cops. GO BERNIE!!

Did you catch that speach where he encouraged all in attendance to talk to Republican friends and families, and ask whether tax breaks for corporations and cuts on education and health care should go together?

He's already starting to reach across the aisle.

Not the case. I know Bernie's been fighting for civil rights since the 60s, as have
I. And yes, Bernie has spoken out before on these issues, but I do wish he had said
what he said to the 11,000 a few hours after Netroots/BLM gathering, and said it in
response to the BLM disruption, instead of going into the economic justice thing.

Bernie DID come out forcefully a few hours later about the epidemic of cops
murdering blacks with impunity on our streets, and he made me damn proud
in doing so. The man listens, and he responds to voters concerns, and he has
NOTHING to apologize about vis-a-vis the Black Lives Matter/Netroots dustup.

I take exception to your insinuation that I'm trashing Bernie. As you can see
from my post history, that is totally not the case, never has been.

I see this whole Phoenix thing as a huge plus for Bernie, not so much for O'Malley
or Clinton (the no-show at Netroots).

He's said this over-and-over.
This isn't any sort of particular response to the BLM/NetRoots disrupters earlier in the day.

Apparently those people sound like they've never listened to his message so I wonder ultimately what their motives are or if someone put them up to this to keep the meme of "Oh, Bernie doesn't have Black support and doesn't support them"

And that meme goes round-and-round which isn't that uncommon with what i consider to be Karl Roveian tactics.

The one that says 'turn your opponents actual strengths into a weakness'.

Even as Bernie continues to PROACTIVELY expound on his support for racial justice as he always has, his efforts will appear, in context of the meme, to be REACTIVE instead and thus appear to the people who don't pay much attention or aren't familiar with his career that he is simply pandering.

That is kinda Rovian.

Sanders is anything but a johnny-come-lately to the realm of racial and social justice.

Of course he listened to BLM, but he's been listening and watching all his life. This doesn't represent some special "awakening" courtesy of BLM

I know that Sanders has been engaged in civil rights for many years.

I think Sanders and O'Malley were caught off-guard by the Netroots Nation incident. It doesn't seem to be a big story nationally or internationally.

I'm most interested in what a candidate proposes and how I think they will do as President.

I hope all the democratic candidates learn and grow from black lives matter. I think they will. Except for Webb, who I cannot stand.

Regardless, he's been doing this since the sixties. I'm sure he knows exactly what America needs.

said that Hillary came out looking good for not attending Netroots Nation and being challenged by BLM.
I thought Hillary was a coward for not showing up at NN. It's her campaign's strategy of roping off the press corp so that their candidate doesn't make a verbal faux pas.

Joan Walsh says that Bernie ignores BLM issues and needs to speak more about them. She intentionally ignores his history of marching with MLK & the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960's when Hillary was a Goldwater Girl.

MHP thought Bernie taught Martin O'Malley a lesson on how to acknowledge BLM issues and not give Third Way responses to BLM.

So it was interesting that MHP interpreted Sanders approach to the BLM protesters differently than Joan Walsh.

avoiding Bernie's history and feeding the meme. She appears so much on MSNBC, esp. Chris Matthews. Rest up some from the mini-battles here that become so taxing; your contributions are very valued and needed.

Bernie also mentioned the OP points to the 8,000 Dallas crowd. I hope he and other candidates will work more closely with BLM to discuss the growing brutality against young blacks and PoC in particular. It's frightening, widespread and horrible; what happened to the young woman Sandra is so sad and awful like others.

The event of your relative sounds wonderful. I have Cuban American family in So. FL and NC, and for a while AZ. Amazes me how some here don't seem to realize that many families have relatives of black, white, Hispanic and other cultural backgrounds for several generations. Have a great week! Your panda is adorable, love every time I see it!

Protesters had the right to express their concerns to our candidate. It is our candidate's job to listen to the people. It's also the job of campaign supporters to listen and respond as non-defensively as possible. Bernie has, once again, acted as a true leader.
