DALLAS U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, the Vermont independent running for president as a Democrat, rallied thousands of Texans here Sunday afternoon with a progressive clarion call that included some tough talk for Democratic opponents who may be overlooking solidly red Texas in their campaign calculus.
"One of the problems that exists in American politics today, in my view, is that the Democratic Party has conceded half of the states in the country at the national level, and that's wrong," Sanders told a raucous crowd inside a downtown hotel ballroom. "We've got to fight them in 50 states, including Texas."
"If we are serious about change in America, we can't just do it in blue states," he later added, emphasizing the need for Democrats to have a "50-state strategy" to win the White House.
Organizers estimated the rally drew more than 7,000 people, though a more official count was expected later in the day. In any case, the event appeared to be the largest held by any presidential candidate in Texas so far this election cycle.

(51,907 posts)It is 63%--the number of eligible voters who sat out 2014. Sanders is attracting thousands of them. Clinton has a snowball's chance in hell of doing the dame.

(21,046 posts)Remember Howard Dean, who was running for president, and governor of Vermont?
Bernie is from Vermont. I think he has been talking to Howard Dean and that's why he's hitting the red states. In the previous two elections, Texas was absolutely ignored by the Democratic candidates. I am glad to see this.
There is no reason why a state of 25 million people should be ignored during a presidential campaign.

That's one of the changes the conservative MBA types decided to make when Dean left.
Texas has been left flapping in the breeze and the lack of competition from the Democratic Party has enabled extremists like Cruz and Perry to gain traction.
Until we flush DWS and her right-wing minions out of the Democratic Party, nothing is going to change.

(20,190 posts)People don't seem to realize that all the large cities in Texas, except Ft Worth, were blue in 2008 and 2012. Sure, if you look at a voting results map of counties, you see so many bleeding dark red that you might just throw up your hands. But most of those dark red countries have tiny populations, many less than 10 people per square mile.
Voter turnout in Texas has sucked for quite a while. 2008 and 2012 it was around 50% OF THE REGISTERED VOTERS. Way too many Democrats figure "why bother". The thing in, with a normal voter turnout is that low, a GOTV effort can make a huge difference. Right now, Texas has a little under 20 million voting age population and about 75% registration. But only 8 million voted in 2012! Abysmal! But, dare I say flippable?
McCain got 55% and Romney got 57%. You'd think that as bloody as a Texas map looks, they would have gotten 70 or 80%, maybe more. But the cities are glorious BLUE. If we ramp up registration and GOTV in the cities, could we get another 800K votes for Bernie? I think we can.
