While almost no colleges are free in this country (the military academies are so long as you serve for several years after), starting out at the local community college, then, if you're lucky enough to be able to continue to live at home while completing your degree at the local branch of your state university, is relatively cheap.

Going four years to one of the elite private schools has a sticker price of probably over 100k, once you include room and board, traveling back and forth, and other expenses.

But yeah, our public school should cost a whole lot less than they do. Blame it on the many state governments who don't want to fund higher education.
