Athens (GA) for Bernie Sanders had 130 people at our event!

Our July 29 meetup (which was only our second event) at the Athens-Clarke County library was a huge success!

We had folks from blue Athens-Clarke County and from surrounding red counties.

After the meeting there was a double rainbow in the sky!

Feel the Bern!

What are we doing in Athens to connect to POC? A big discussion going on the People of Color FB page.

We are working on reaching out to everyone, especially people who have never heard of Bernie. We are just getting started. We could use your help.

I've also invited all my POC friends to like POC for Bernie Sanders. I think if they are on there they will probably be looking for Athens events and groups.

Here are some ideas for reaching out:

A table at the West Broad St. Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings and Wed. evenings with information about Sanders' platform. Talking to leaders there.

To directly reach Latinos good places to post stuff or to be are Tlaloc on Chase St. and Compadres, as well as JJ Market on 441. I can connect you to bilingual Spanish speakers who might be willing help reach out.

We might consider directly inviting student leaders from UGA to offer advice and support. Some relevant Registered Student Orgs might be the Young Dems, Hispanic Student Association, Black Leadership: https://uga.collegiatelink.net/organizations

People with friends in local churches could ask if they are welcome to speak about what Bernie has to offer at a meeting.

There are a lot more great ideas on the People of Color for Bernie Sanders FB page

I will pass along all the suggestions to the committee. We will like the POC Sanders page & post a link on our page.

I will be out of town Wed. to Mon. Perhaps we could meet up after I get back. All of your ideas are really good.

We had an age span from 20s - 80s. The group included students, townies, young parents, computer/social media experts, local business owners, musicians, carpenters, organic farmers, professionals, teachers, university professors, artists, social activists and retired folks. We even had a few women who are self-described current/former disenchanted Republicans!

Surrounding the blue island that is Athens, there is a sea of red counties. However, there are Democrats and progressives who live in these areas. We already have members of our group from those areas and we met more last night.

Bernie's message speaks to the concerns of women and families. We will spread the word.

that are starting to listen and learn.

There are active military and veterans who are sick of illegal wars, hundreds of billions spent on the latest and greatest military equipment, while military families are having to get food stamps and caring for vets at the VA means making an appointment 6 months in advance.

There are Republicans who are fed up with the anti-education, anti-contraception, pro-birth movement.

The are Republicans who are starting to see that the war on drugs has been a phenomenally expensive failure with the only winners being the private prison industry.

There are older Republicans who have taken huge hits to their retirement savings, while the Wall Street executives that caused those losses are sipping $1000 champagne on their yachts. They hear about "reforms" to Medicare and Social Security that mean money out of their almost empty pockets.

There are Republicans like Louis Lang, who thought Obamacare was horrible, until he started going blind.

There are Christian Republicans that are tired of their religion being used as an excuse to do some very un-Christian things.

The Democratic Party has always been a party of inclusion. We need to graciously invite these people to come over and see that the grass will be greener for EVERYBODY on our side.

Bernie is speaking to ALL 50 states.

We had so many around Seattle. Can't wait to hear Erandini(?)``going from memory, she was going to a huge one in a Brewery in Seattle. I went to a small 20ish meeting in a Chinese Cocktail bar on an island just to the east of Seattle.

Great span of ages 20ish to 76. We are all going to caucus!

Our event was in the auditorium of our recently renovated county library.

We also had an wide age span, probably from 20s - 80s. (There was one baby too!)

Good luck out there in Seattle. I would love to travel there sometime.

not just voting for the presidential primary and general election choice.

There was a huge under vote in both the 2008 and 2012 elections.

Our federal senate and congress races, state senate and representative races and statewide elected offices as well as local election races are so important.

We are going to be working on this issue.
