Hi y'all
Not sure how much to say because I have serious problems with Sanders on several issues but even on those, not to mention overall, he's miles ahead of those others.
So he'll get my vote in the Primaries and the General. If he doesn't make it to the Generals, count me out of the pony show too- I'll write Sanders in on the Democratic ballot as principle.
Just thought I'd say hi to all my friends because with few exceptions and very few surprises, this is exactly where I knew I'd find almost all the DU allies whose thoughts and activism I've not just admired, but relied on over the years.
Hi y'all
Edit: Thank you ALL for the warm welcome and the kind recs! I did not expect this and it's very heartwarming.
I'M HOME indeed!

(17,663 posts)However, depending what state you live in, you might want to reconsider your write-in plans if your state is very close and Dems need every vote. If there is any chance of it giving us a Rethug in the White House, you should reconsider. Also, down ticket is vital as well for holding onto the Senate at the very least.
Otherwise, we could still go backwards nationally and in the states, no matter which Dem is in the White House and it would be a greater disaster if the GOP was there.
Strategic voting is critical, because any Dem is "miles ahead" of any Republican!!!!
dreamnightwind
(4,775 posts)Fight like hell against the corporatists in the primary, and if they win, and you live in a state where the vote will be close, it might make sense to hold your nose. My state is California, safely blue, they rarely need my vote so they have to earn it, but strategy is important, no need to put a Republican in power.
Sometimes I wonder if corporate Democrats don't enable more bad policy than Republicans (we, most of us anyway, don't fight against those policies when Democrats are pushing them) and if they aren't just a way to sustain corporatism that would implode if Republicans were running the show. That argument has merit, but I'm just not ready to let things go to hell to that degree yet.

I feel we're going back to the stone age and I truly fear what Republicans will do...they are really harming us as it is!!

(35,568 posts)I won't be a stranger- not for this fight. That post was the one that finally made me jump back in. That little stunt yesterday totally pissed me off as has all the other dirty manipulative little games going on. I was watching Sanders through a link someone posted here and could not believe what I was seeing. It was a confirmation of everything many of us suspected when the Netroots event took place- they weren't there for dialog or to be heard- just to destroy the enemy completely. Such nasty ugly bullshit.

(13,133 posts)Generations of people that think people with different skin tones or characteristic somehow must be inferior is quite a concept to wrap ones head around if one looks at all the facts involved. But of course, cults are where the cave man always wanted to live if the truth be known.
b.t.w. Is there anyway i can just be a fifty-ish person looking for someone else to help stop the steady trajectory of a society that is headed off the side of a cliff?
Catherina
(35,568 posts)but we're plagued with them lol. There's too much truth in your first paragraph and I've been thinking about that alot these last few years. It's repetitive and all over unfortunately. I see it everyday where I am and it's really distressing to see how foreigners treat the indigenous population where I am (Guatemala) They treat them as a numb dumb work force with the full complicity of the lighter-shaded mixed descendants of the old European colonials.
I'm all for letting society head off the side of a cliff if that's where it's intent on heading but every once in a while, there's a ray of hope that gets you pumped up to join with others to help stop that trajectory. A ray of light like right now and not because of one person but because of all the fed-up people who say no to that status quo trajectory. I'll be that someone for you if you promise to be that someone for me too

(111,359 posts)because the root canal will be far less painful.
I live in a blue state with few electoral votes but I'll still vote for the root canal if Sanders doesn't make it to the ticket in the general. I won't be happy about it, but I don't want to take even the slightest chance a Republican will take the office. They damage the country far too much.

(45,251 posts)I imagine most of us disagree with him on some issues and that is going to be so of any candidate who runs.
Catherina
(35,568 posts)I'm with you on that and not too hung up on the disagreements. Since people are always lecturing us on being more *pragmatic*, I'm doing so lol. I see Bernie as a stepping stone in the correct direction on important issues- the most important ones being populist democracy and economics.
And then, because people are asking hard questions, there's this:
merrily
(45,251 posts)There have been issues about white people mentioning Dr. King and I look white.
Catherina
(35,568 posts)there are issues even when Black people mention Dr King. We're supposed to stop at "I have a dream" and ignore everything he said afterwards, especially on war, militarism, economics and how he was organizing a Poor People's Campaign demanding "economic and human rights for poor Americans of diverse backgrounds".
For the record:
The Poor Peoples Campaign was motivated by a desire for economic justice: the idea that all people should have what they need to live. King and the SCLC shifted their focus to these issues after observing that gains in civil rights had not improved the material conditions of life for many African Americans. The Poor Peoples Campaign was a multiracial effortincluding African-Americans, whites, Mexican-Americans, Puerto Ricans, and Native Americansaimed at alleviating poverty regardless of race.
Poor people from around the country made up most of the group. Many officials perceived even this group as threatening.
The Committee demanded an Economic Bill of Rights with five planks:
"A meaningful job at a living wage"
"A secure and adequate income" for all those unable to find or do a job
"Access to land" for economic uses
"Access to capital" for poor people and minorities to promote their own businesses
Ability for ordinary people to "play a truly significant role" in the government

(45,251 posts)got results by doing things right. You know, civil disobedience. So, if you will excuse me, I am just going to stay out of all the Dr. King controversies. I have to pick my battles.
But, I sure am happy you are back. It really is fun to share things like a turn out of 28,000 at Portland.
While Bernie is getting himself known, though, Hillary is collecting Benjamins. So, duck for cover.

I am down with BLM's goals, tho I'm not sure what those women are after. But to say they're black so it's okay if they scream at a 73 yo man who is trying to do some good is the soft bigotry of low expectations. There I said it. Damn I hate this whole thing.

(35,568 posts)There I was, all settled in with a hot cup of tea, had just finished listening to the NAACP rep and those two bats out of hell crashed the scene before Bernie had even gotten 10 words out of his mouth. I'm down with reducing Black deaths but having seen how he operates in many countries, I shy away from any Soros-funded activities and I'm sure as hell not going to hitch my stars to Palin-lovers and someone who embezzled over $11,000 from a nonprofit- straight out of the mouths of the poor, on the days she could even be bothered to show up to work (that being Tia, one of the 3 co-founders).
