Bernie Sanders Adapts to His Sudden Popularity in Democratic Race
The Vermont senator, long on the fringe, is energized and a bit bewildered as he draws huge crowds

By Peter Nicholas
Aug. 21, 2015 4:21 p.m. ET

RENO, Nev.—Bernie Sanders could barely get a forkful of his 16-ounce ribeye from plate to mouth before another stranger in the crowded steakhouse barged up to his table asking for a selfie.

Mailmen in town for a conference, the harried waitresses and wide-eyed diners all wanted their moment with the bespectacled, disheveled Democratic presidential candidate and Vermont senator who has improbably emerged as one of the hottest tickets on the 2016 campaign trail.

...

“The kind of response we’re getting really stuns me,” said Mr. Sanders, his blue button-down shirt soaked with sweat after a recent outdoor rally near Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

It’s unclear if the Sanders boom will fizzle or if he can convert the large crowds he is attracting into a movement capable of seizing the nomination from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He has a passionate following among liberal Democrats who have embraced his message that income inequality in the U.S. is one of the defining moral issues of the era.

...

A month later, Mr. Sanders was a declared candidate when he found himself caught in a traffic jam in Minneapolis with a large crowd looming outside his window. He asked an aide if there was something going on that night.

“No,” said Phil Fiermonte, the Sanders campaign’s field director, “they’re here for you.”

“Are you kidding?” Mr. Sanders said.

not in the hope that it happens, but in how to react if it does - because it's a real possibility, even if not high probability

and just let the media frenzy burn itself out a bit.

If she withdraws (which I think she would do from prison and nowhere else) he can afford to take a few days to craft a response.

Despite all the hoopla. Despite the naysayers. Despite the propaganda 'journos' trying to hide behind his campaign.

Common Sense Sanders = Class Act.

5. The status quo'ers have SO underestimated the ANGER that is out there among the people who THEY

so disrespected, while they bailed out their corrupt buddies, and left Main St to fend for themselves, ironically using THEIR money to pay off the criminal debts accrued by the Wall St Gamblers.

They thought we FORGOT!

WRONG! We did NOT forget, and no, we didn't forget Iraq either.

Bernie gave the people a microphone. Up to NOW, no one else was willing to do that.

I can understand why he is so shocked, if you watched the Corporate Media you would think we have all 'moved on'. Shameful propaganda, how on earth do people move on from dead soldiers, from dead babies, from loss of jobs and homes, from a lifetime of playing the game the way people were told to play only to be cast aside while the cheaters grow even richer?

They are SO out of touch it boggles the mind.

despite repeated, loud, warnings. It boggles the mind for sure but that's ok because it's too late for them to reinvent anything this late in the game.

militarized Robo Cops and the NG and their tanks and military weapons to try to quash that movement, it was over. But OWS never went away, they joined forces with other Social Justice Movements and Bernie who was one of the first elected officials to meet with them publicly, has received their support.

Their amazing tech skills wrt to getting their OWN media to cover their events has now been at work for Bernie. They anticipated a media blackout of their movement, and brought their own media to cover it, and it went Global.

Same thing with Bernie now, he is using the same techniques and doesn't need to spend a fortune on Commercials. I'm amazed at how out of touch they are frankly. But hopefully they will remain that way. They just can't figure out how someone they thought would be gone in a couple of weeks is now a serious challenge to their corporate candidates.

"Never in my wildest imagination would I believe that we would have 1000s of people coming out to rallies, today in Greenville SC, or here in Columbia, SC... Nobody would have told me that we'd have 28,000 people coming out to Portland, OR or 27,000 out to Los Angeles.

It's not only the size of the crows, it is the enthusiasm.. and it kind of makes me a little bit nervous, because as I say all the time, and as I said tonight, this is not about me, I can not do it alone. What we need is a political movement of millions of people ... "

12. That's the most important thing about this campaign. That it really isn't about Bernie. This country

needs a political revolution to rid us of the neo-cons/libs who are taking over, and have to a great extent. The ONLY way is to unite people. Bernie's role isn't so much about being President, it is about getting this movement started.

And so far, I think he has done a great job of doing that, starting the process of creating this very necessary movement.

from Democrats, Republicans, and Independents after the rally was a clear demonstration of the difference he's offering us. He's open. He's approachable. And, of course, he's got the issues.

15. Democratic Race? I have doubts.
Sat Aug 22, 2015, 01:32 PM
Aug 2015

Seems the house democrats do not want Bernie or they are chicken to say they are for Bernie or endorse him. The DNC and DWS do not want Bernie. DU admins do not want Bernie.

IMO if Hillary wins the primary then there will be a push for Bernie to run as an independent. We need to be careful here because pushing for Bernie to run as an Independent will get you TS'd and I am sure the admins are itching to purge any independent candidate pushing DU members. I am sure that should Hillary win the primary a lot of us will leave DU or not be posting for a while. I will vote for Bernie no matter what he runs as because if he doesn't win the primary I am thinking that I will give up on giving a fucking shit about DU and the Dem party ...because the oligarchy will have won and I will not be aligned with them, they are my enemies.
