Bernie Sanders
Related: About this forumSumter, South Carolina
Sanders told about 600 people in a community center in Sumter, South Carolina, that 27 percent of the children in the state live in poverty. Of those 300,000 children, 138,000 are black, 95,000 are white and 34,000 are Hispanic. This issue of childhood poverty impacts every race and weve got to stand together to change it, Sanders said.
The poverty data dramatizes wealth and income inequality in the United States. The gap between the rich and everyone else is greater today than at any time since before the Great Depression.
U.S Sen. Bernie Sanders focused on poverty and health care as he began the second day of a weekend swing through the Palmetto State on Saturday.
On health care, Sanders criticized South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and the state Legislature for their tragically wrong refusal to expand Medicaid coverage for the poor and working families under the Affordable Care Act. Dont punish the people of your own state, Sanders said, because of your dislike of President Obama.
The federal health care law was designed to provide Medicaid coverage for more than 10 million of the poorest uninsured Americans, including an estimated 200,000 people in South Carolina Under the law, the federal government covers 100 percent of the cost of expansion through 2016. After the Supreme Court ruled in 2012 that the expansion could only be implemented voluntarily, South Carolina was among states where Republican legislators and governors resisted giving more people access to health care.
A University of South Carolina study found South Carolina would receive $11.2 billion in federal funding by 2020 from Medicaid expansion. In addition to offering greater access to health care, the expansion would create more than 44,000 new jobs, the study concluded.

(13,877 posts)is a good thing. It's not just R and D, it's almost an entire alienated swath of the public. Even Bernie would probably say that after thinking about it, what they come up with may be less important than the process of actually weighing things in their minds.
It's actually Liberal to challenge one's thoughts to any degree and not kneejerk and spout, like some we know.

(18,791 posts)I think in these smaller events, it's more relaxed and he doesn't need to yell (which is what seems to happen with everyone in large venues).
My past favorite was his July 29th talk, in the small group for the organizing meetings...today might replace that.
He covered so much information but it seemed more detailed.

(13,877 posts)and I can run circles around those a lot younger than me. So, that's another reason I like him. We need some "putting to rest" about this age thing.
What's going on tonight at 7 pm Eastern? I've been out of town all week and have to go back out tomorrow so I've missed pretty much everything for the last week. Still in South Carolina?

(9,298 posts)if my lifelong Republican friend and her husband in Pawleys Island are going to any of Bernie's events. If not, they're no doubt hearing and reading about him. It's wonderful that he's spending so much time there...seems to be paying off big time.

(84,711 posts)Can't wait for Charleston, tonight. Charleston is actually the most liberal voting area of SC...so it will be another view.
I couldn't believe all those "white people in Columbia and Sumpter applauding and standing up in support of Women, GLBT and Black Lives Matter.
He didn't leave anything back and it was wonderful see Bernie give a voice to those who don't have a voice the way SC Politics works with the RW Christian Evangelists, Corporatists along with the ever present "Old Money" who control things there.
