US Presidential Race: For Meet the Press, Bernie Sanders Is He Who Must Not Be Named

Sen. Bernie Sanders announced his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination last week–but Meet the Press‘s Chuck Todd, who’s “obsessed with elections,” didn’t seem to notice. (cc photo: Paul Morigi/Brookings)

Meet the Press host Chuck Todd can’t seem to get enough of the 2016 presidential race. Yet the one major candidate who announced he was running last week–Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent who declared on April 30 he was running for the Democratic nomination–was strikingly ignored on Meet the Press‘s May 2 broadcast.

It’s not that the broadcast didn’t have time to talk about the 2016 race. One of the show’s guest was Martin O’Malley, brought on to talk about the Baltimore protests as former mayor of Baltimore and former Maryland governor, but also as someone “weighing a bid for the Democratic presidential nomination”: “Do you think you can still run on your record, as mayor of Baltimore and governor of Maryland,” Todd asked him. “Do you think this is a positive thing that voters will look at…?”

Todd closed his interview by saying: “We’ll see you, you’ll probably announce in Baltimore.” But we didn’t see anything about the candidate who actually announced that week in Washington, DC.

1. Considering this show was about Baltimore, it made sense to have O'Malley on

The entire news media has been centered on Baltimore. As much as I dislike Chuckie Todd, he will have Bernie on and probably more than once.

It wasn't all about O'Malley. The Toad mentioned a bunch of fringe GOP'ers, plus Hillary, Jeb, Just about everyone else except Sanders.

all about the republicon clown car + Hillary, but no mention of Bernie, at least while I was briefly listening yesterday morning while my internet was down.

(downloaded onto my Ipod). It was crazy - I kept waiting to hear Bernie's name. Not even a one-line teaser for next week. It made the show seem stupid and irrelevant. And I hate Todd's questioning. It's so formulaic.

I'm not going to bother downloading it again. Maybe I'll send Todd an email or whatever to let him know of my disgust.

9. Greed and hatred don't like kindness and generosity. I pity the rich. Let's not be angry about it.

Yes, it's easy to hate people for what Todd is doing, like when someone doesn't return your call. And it doesn't feel like we can feel good without winning. But we can feel great about who we are and what we stand for.

I had dropped out of DU for a couple of years, in disgust. Then along came Bernie Sanders, and I realized that what we have in common is what makes the world a good place to live in.

We can feel good even if we lose. I find it hard to even type that, but there is a truth that I've discovered through this campaign, as brief as it has been. I feel alive again.
