Related: About this forumPlease fellow Bernistas, ignore the flamebait ops in GD P.
They are trolling and if you respond it will only encourage more of the same. Some people are not interested in civil debate and if we engage them more of our posts will be hidden and we need EVERY voice.
Use the ignore function - liberally if you can't resist.

(57,349 posts)From Skinner:
Positive threads about Democratic Underground or its members are are permitted.
Threads complaining about Democratic Underground or its members; threads complaining about jury decisions, locked threads, suspensions, bannings, or the like; and threads intended to disrupt or negatively influence the normal workings of Democratic Underground and its community moderating system are not permitted.
Groups have different rules about meta discussions, they can be disruptive and contrary to the purpose of the tos.
Generally it's a good idea to keep it positive.

(34,106 posts)Thank you. I intend to hold my head up even if Sanders gets creamed. I don't think it will happen but still, I (we) supported a candidate for the people and anything that would help us was something he would strive for. Beholden to us not to the money behind his campaign. That is something to be proud of.
He wins no matter what, those behind him now will haunt Hillary if she dares to move right. This little tiny bit is what has been missing for a good many years, it is our responsibility to haunt those who intend to let us swing in the breeze of the wealthy and corporate interests. Bernie has created what I hope and believe will remain a monster. Especially the kids, what kind of life can they expect if the third way continues? Remember Viet Nam? If we did not fight here our brothers and fathers and friends were sent off to fight a bad war and would suffer forever for it. Motivation has returned.

(11,945 posts)I feel compelled to stand up for what I find worthwhile and true and not let others run roughshod over the debate. Much hangs in the balance and there might be lurkers or undecideds who need to hear what we have to say. Also, it helps me find ways to put concepts and thoughts into words, something I don't always do easily. My facility with language has weakened with age, so political debates feel like good mental exercise. Use it or lose it, as they say.
But I'm learning to recognize the ones who aren't worth the trouble. There seem to be a number of astonishingly cold, malevolent, hateful folks out there; some seem like paid propagandists who lie with ease and have no basis of values or genuine conviction from which to operate. I find them revolting. So it's always amazing when they call us nasty haters, etc. Last night a very sweet, thoughtful, prolific Bernie supporter wrote an OP about Bernie's good record on animal welfare legislation, and a number of us Bernie supporting animal lovers commented favorably -- and then some Hillary fans dropped in to make fun of us. How cynical! I'd be ashamed to behave that way. If I thought they were just young men trying to appear tough and cynical, it might be understandable, but they're not. Quite a few seem to be nothing but aging mean girls. The ones who hang out at the other website seem almost mentally disturbed, imo. I wish I knew what did that to them.
Another thing is that I genuinely like most Bernie supporters and worry when they're too effective, as those are the ones the meanies try to alert stalk, and I don't want anyone taken away. So that's where bmus' advice to recognize and ignore flame bait comes in handy -- although I've served on juries in which mild, harmless comments were alerted on.
DU is interesting and engaging, but if engaged in too vigorously, it can lead to a serious lack of balance.
BeanMusical
(4,389 posts)"I wish I knew what did that to them." A majority (let's say 50% +1) of those hanging out at that place were doing the same thing and using the same tactics long before Hillary was officially running for the nomination. So now they are going after anyone who dares to criticize HRC (or say anything positive about Bernie) the same way they did for people criticizing Obama. Just my 2 cents, I have no idea why they were behaving that way to begin with.

(46,436 posts)or to comment at all on Hillary threads, actually. I have a lot of issues with her, but I know anything I say isn't going to convince any of them to change their minds, so I just keep my thoughts to myself. I think the only thing I'm going to have a hard time with is their gloating if/when she wins the nomination because you just know they're going to be ugly about it. They do themselves no favors really by antagonizing those of us on the left whose votes they will need. I'm in a safely red state, and I might be tempted to write Bernie in if they become too obnoxious. I was a dreaded Nader voter in 2000, which made not one bit of difference in Alaska.

(4,695 posts)Party. So what Obama did on his watch, is their New Party. Sanders wanted to, sort of, primary Obama in 2011-12, by asking why the 2008 campaign promises were not kept especially on Social Security. They find that unacceptable. In my opinion, they find that anyone challenging the New Democrats-Obama and Hillary- should go. The GOP Benghazi Committee just challenged Hillary Clinton and she beat them back; Hillary primaried them on 2012, last week. They believe that the New Democrats can beat back the Social Democrat too.
Now it seems to me, that the New Democrat was not expecting the Social Democrat to run a challenge; and neither were the New-supporters. 2014's new wave of GOPers would like to change Social Security. Does the GOP have something in common with the New?

There are real points to be made but they can't make them when they can't converse and refuse to listen. There are so many things I would like to talk about but it is of no use. It all looks like a disaster from both sides.
We have made our own mistakes in my eyes but they are just riding that horse over the cliff. One can only imagine what their site looks like. I was curious once and saw then went back after someone posted a link to something and I guess you are not allowed in unless you are approved. The fact that they said the things they did about us, others and about DU itself should have been enough to not allow them to return. You can't say one tiny bit of that here and stay. I know some of you have copied what was said and by whom. What I saw was scary and compulsively insulting to DU and many of us here just because we do not agree with them.

They can throw all the mud they want at us, I don't give a rat's ass but to impugn his integrity is beyond the pale. They can say Bernie's supporters are ruining his chances, but the sexist spin came straight out of Hillary's mouth.
The point is while deciding to vote for or against a candidate because of their supporters is just plain silly if the candidate's positions are solid and unassailable, voting against another because of the shit coming out of the candidate's own mouth can't be countenanced is wise.
Then again the GOP has a shit-talking candidate with shifty supporters and he's the front runner (see Trump, Donald).

I simply don't understand how this country got in this shape. MSM, too much money, greed or and electorate that wants nothing more than some sort of a rumble all the time.
Not until this election have I EVER heard Hillary talk this way about these issues. I say this in all honesty, not just because I support Bernie, but it HAS become more difficult to recognize this Hillary. She's been a political figure for so many years and I've followed her and her issues for most of the time, but I don't recall her taking these positions before.
Just had to put my two cents in about this new Hillary, and it's one of there MAIN reasons I don't support her.
So, no I won't bother playing on that play ground.
beam me up scottie
(57,349 posts)That's what she reminds me of, I don't hate Hillary but I sure as hell don't trust her. She'll be better than a Republican but can't compare to Bernie.
I stay out of their positive threads out of respect and I genuinely like many Hillary supporters.
ChiciB1
(15,435 posts)both she and Bill were always to the right of me. I campaigned for Bill knowing this, but as with Obama he veered more to the right than I expected. Bill excited people with his dazzle and had the ability to bring the Democratic Party when it was sorely needed. Did it mean his views changed on issues, I didn't ever think so. As time has gone by THIS Democratic Party has turned pretty much into what Bill Clinton began. Mostly a DLC/THIRD WAY Party that I can no longer recognize as the Democratic Party I've always been a member of.
Hillary has been entrenched as one of them for as long as she's been a politician and to now have the opportunity to support a man who has essentially always stood for what I've stood for is an honor. As a woman I consider myself as strong and outspoken as Hillary is on HER issues, but she NEVER talked "my issues: until now. So yes, a CHAMELEON who isn't going to fool me because I feel she's not sincere and will NOT govern as we hear these words come spilling out.
I have always said that given the choices on the other side I WILL be forced to vote for her if she's the nominee. A carnival barker and a surgeon who may have not even been good at that seem to be the way they're headed. I once thought that would be impossible, but even the others scare me enough. However, IF I do have to vote for her it will be with a very heavy heart because I truly believe NOTHING will change. She's gifted in many ways and to many here they DO think it's HER time. I detest having to cast a vote under these circumstances. All I can do now is FIGHT for who I believe in, and it's Bernie. There are NO perfect candidates or people, and I'm aware he may have to bend at times. I could go on, but those of us who DO support him know what I'm talking about and I don't feel compelled to get into tit for tat with her supporters. It's silly and I doubt what I have to say will change any minds.
So we agree. We have a mountain to climb and that's my focus.

(45,984 posts)This sophistry has been thicker than usual over there, starting with some notion that social justice and economic justice are somehow mutually exclusive to a fact-based critique of one's opponent is going negative to the now two-week old canard about Mrs. Clinton "crushing" all others in the "debate." Insofar as it was a debate, I don't mind them saying "Hillary won," as that is a purely subjective assertion, but in way no would such a victory be "crashing" as our man was clearly not crushed.
Of course, if any Hillary supporter is woefully misinformed about Bernie's positions on issues or his record, then give them a little forbearance as they are probably getting their news from the same source that tells us Hillary "crushed" her opponents in the debate two weeks ago. The MSM may as well be FoxNews, only more open to Democrats, at least corporate Democrats. The MSM is owned by the same people who own Mrs. Clinton.
So yes, thery're acting like children over there. It reminds me of the arguments we used to have on playgrounds about whose favorite baseball team was better. It isn't fit discussion for an adult forum. The best thing to do is not participate in that kind of juvenile taunting.

I was thinking about your advice to avoid flame bait OPs. I generally do it anyway because those threads are usually full of people I don't like. (14,570 posts)I like the give and take. The thing that I've noticed is that while most of us talk about the issues Bernie is bringing up and that we care about, like health care, Social Security, free college, corporations paying their fair share of taxes, overturning Citizens United, etc., the Clinton supporters don't seem to have that luxury because it is hard to tell where their candidate is on any given issue because she's a political weather vane.
Seriously, I'm very concerned this time around, because I really thought Obama was going to be the next FDR in 2008 - worked on his campaign and everything. Then in 2012, I did it again because I thought well, what the heck. He'll be in his second term and he can really get progressive! Instead we've gone the wrong direction in some fundamental ways. Obama has had some major milestones, but we have to face the fact that milestones like gay marriage, as good as that is, doesn't affect the oligarchs. Therefore, Obama was permitted to do it.
This Trans Pacific Partnership is the worst of the worst. If you still believe at all in representative democracy, then you've gotta be against TPP because it basically forces the United States to give up its sovereignty to corporate-funded arbitrators. You think we lost jobs with NAFTA? That was NOTHING compared to what TPP will do.
I mean, the oligarchs, the Wall Street bankers, the MIC, the private prison 'industries' - they are ALL waiting behind the gate ready to take over once and for all. I support Bernie because to me he is the last bedraggled, frazzled protector of what could be. He's the only guy who has a 40 year record of doing the right thing.
Unfortunately, while I'm preaching to the choir here, I have very little confidence that enough American people will get engaged to take us to the tipping point. We are too ignorant, and the thing that makes my blood boil is the oligarchs have systematically dumbed us down over decades...

if a LIE is told enough times, it becomes "Common Knowledge."
I know of several major LIES that are becoming Common knowledge about Bernie simply because they are told so often.
Some here even provide a link back to another repetition of the LIE so it looks legitimate.

I had just read the thread and watched a fine human being being attacked by a pack of jackals. They all came in at once, like a swarm of locusts. I felt so sorry for her having to deal with them.
Here's the alerter's polite, mature, admirable complaint:
I was also called "paternalistic" in my previous hide (of July 12). Have never, ever been called that in RL and am most definitely a woman. They seem to like to throw that word around.

(11,945 posts)It was worth it to tell them off. If I'd known I was going to get a hide, I'd have been even more honest. They desperately need a dressing down.
I've only noticed one person referring to me as a man and that person lives in a mirror-lined room where they are so bedazzled by what they gaze at all day that no one else comes into focus.
It just so happens I really like men and don't particularly mind being called one.
There are things I like about DU but it's got some serious illness lodged under the cracks. There have been a whole slew of alerts today; I had two, others had several, and I know you get a lot. I hope all's well with you. The nice people here are amazingly nice. And it's funny, even though most of my good friends in RL have been men, the most heroic people here seem to be women. Wow, that's interesting: the lowest and highest at DU seem to be women. Although there are some very nice men here, solid and calm, a comforting quality. And the funny, witty guys.

But now the underlying vectors in Bernie's favor are re-asserting themselves, plus she is having a bad week with BLM. So yeah, avoid the bait. Why discuss Bernie with someone whose mind is made up. We have more constructive ways to use our time, imo. If they try to create another factually incorrect meme, sure, correct it. But let's stay focused on winning the nomination. (11,945 posts)She has to project "just the right image" and hold it as long as she possibly can before it starts disintegrating. My "lesser" side (which recent DU events have stirred up) might even suggest provoking her into losing it.

Also, at the suggestion of another commenter, I've been looking around a bit and am convinced that some of what we're dealing with on the "other side" falls into the category of mental/emotional baggage. Realistically, there is nothing any of us can do to remedy other people's inner demons. Fighting too hard just makes them flare up. For the few here who don't know about the brief history of the Conservative Cave forum, what happened was, some members of DU decided to post flamebait threads, and troll the forum in a lame attempt to try to get regular DU members banned from this forum.
They went after popular members like Will Pitt and many others who used to post here daily.
However, the mods at DU soon became aware of their behavior.
So, they were the ones who wound up getting banned from DU.
Instead of those DU members who had been targeted by them.
Then some of those banned members formed their own site so they could still continue to make snarky comments about people posting here.
Originally, I thought that the Conservative Cave forum would only exist for a year or so, before those people would give up whining about the people posting here.
I was wrong.
I underestimated just how long they would continue to make ridiculous comments about DU or its members.
It's sad, and it's pathetic to the Nth degree, for the members of that other site to make snarky comments about people posting on the DU forum just because some of us have a different viewpoint concerning politics.
It's no different than what the members of the Conservative Cave are doing.
Nevertheless, it has become obvious to me that those people at that other site only have 1 agenda . . to make DU an echo chamber for Hillary's campaign.
Since that is not going to happen in the near future, I hope you put those DU members who are still posting here -- and still posting on that other site, as well -- on ignore.
Nothing you are going to say to them is going to change their minds, anyway.

(57,349 posts)Someone recently sent me a screenshot that showed certain members are trying to make me paranoid. I guess my continued presence here made them double down on the stalking.
I won't let trolls intimidate me into silence, no matter which cave they're from. When bigots and bullies hate you it's a sign you're doing something right.
Thanks for the heads up, I'll keep challenging the lies and posting facts. DU has been my home since 2004 and I won't be driven off by cowardly keyboard commandos.

(17,656 posts)As if calling you a liar takes precedence over supporting the candidate of their choice.
As if calling you a liar will get their candidate automagically nominated to be the Democratic nominee.
Or perhaps, it simply justifies their existence on the internet.
However, arguing with toxic people like that will make you sick.
Stay away from toxic people.

(9,002 posts)Well, thank goodness there's no one here by that name. I'd hate to think that we'd have such a despicable person as a member of DU.
I guess we'll never know who that person is.

(17,656 posts)I guess it's okay by you if threads like the one about BMUS exist on his forum.

The truth ........... it burns.
Excellent work, bmus!

(9,497 posts)It makes for a far more pleasant read. I was called for jury duty in a thread by someone on my ignore list. Holy shite...there was some deep mud slinging. All the people I put on ignore are staying on ignore. There is just no reason to read what they post. The level of anger is palpable. I am afraid some will self combust.
Of course, I will only know that happens if someone posts something here about it.

The things I've read here lately make me wonder what website I'm on.
The hosts locked one particularly vile thread last night.

(45,319 posts)dishonest instantly resort to the oldest homophobic slams in the book. They are pikers, rhetorically starving, incapable of coherent response in the face of reason.
Also, they are utterly exploitative of very important issue sets. That just makes me sad.

(248 posts)and Hillary is not as "inevitable" as they would have you believe. If she were a shoe-in for the nomination, why would they bother so much with the trolling and posts meant to demoralize Bernie supporters? All I can say is ignore the posts that are nothing more than attempts to stir up shit. If you have citable sources that can refute a particular argument, post it, then leave the forum. No point in sticking around and getting dragged into something that will serve no purpose but to get you banned.

By ignoring the flamebait and not feeding the trolls you win.
