Bernie Sanders

The usual question that gets asked about Bernie Sanders's political ideology is what does it mean that Sanders is a democratic socialist?
But the reverse question is, in some ways, more revealing: What does it mean that Bernie Sanders isn't a Democrat?
Sanders's ideas and voting record are pretty standard for a liberal Democrat. His big speech defining his ideology mostly quoted FDR a Democrat and laid out policies that put him squarely in the liberal mainstream. Indeed, according to Keith Poole and Howard Rosenthal's data, Sanders isn't even the Senate's most liberal Democrat right now he trails Elizabeth Warren and Tammy Baldwin.
Moreover, the Vermont senator's life would, arguably, be easier if he were just a Democrat. He caucuses with Democrats in the Senate. He is running for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination. Democrats are one of this country's two major political parties, whereas there's no socialist movement in America to speak of.
So there's at least a bit of a mystery here. Sanders could call himself a Democrat it would fit his ideology, and it would fit his ambitions. But he steadfastly refuses. Understanding why is, I think, crucial to understanding not just Sanders but his support.
Sanders doesn't believe Democrats are the party of the working class at least not anymore

(5,122 posts)The Democrats, to a much-too-great degree, are separated from working families. Are the Democrats 10 times, 100 times, better on all of the issues than the Republicans? They surely are, but I think it would be hard to imagine if you walked out of here or walked down the street or went a few miles away from here and you stopped somebody on the street and you said, "Do you think that the Democratic Party is the party of the American working class?" People would look at you and say, "What are you talking about?"

The American working class is not supposed to be heard.
We should be grateful for what we have.
Bernie is the first true Democrat in a long time.

(18,791 posts)When I saw something in an article this morning (about the SS cap)...
That only 6% of America makes above $97,000 per year?
I wondered if that was current or an older number from 2008...Regarless (because I'll lay odds, it hasn't changed much) I was appalled.

(18,791 posts)He is what I've always "thought" that Democrats were supposed to be about.
But, especially this year, I've been schooled on the likes of the DNC/DWS, the Entrenched Establishment, Third Way and the Clinton Family.
I don't like anything I've learned.
America needs Bernie and a Political Revolution, desperately.

The people believe strongly in the things Bernie stands for.

(6,323 posts)It took a freaking running start and catapulted as far right as it could. It's only drag were the people calling bullshit on it. Yet still they have dragged the uninformed and injected fake Dems into the party.
I can't even believe that people on DU literally spit out Republican talking points and support them.

(4,205 posts)I still consider myself a Dem. but there is no real "official" democratic party anymore, the so called "leadership" have gone so far right as to be almost indistinguishable from the "normal" Rep. ( I never really refer to the idiots running the GOP or there candidates even as politicians, they are something else altogether)

The republican party has become the Fascist Party and moved so far to the right that HIllary can spout her "Goldwater Girl" republican values and sound like a lefty.

(23,730 posts)under the shocking complacency of people who've never had to lift a finger or pay for anything on their own in their lives (they literally don't know how money works), at some abstract level you can get them to agree that the US economy is a goose that lays golden eggs, and killing it for a NASDAQ uptick is (in the abstract) a bad idea

(441 posts)If Sanders isn't the nominee I am going to leave the party and become an independent. I've been a Democrat my entire adult life but I cannot continue to support the party's neo-liberal third-way policies. This election is the last straw for me. I've been voting for the lesser of evils for 25 years and the country and the world is going to hell in a hand basket From now on they'll have to earn my vote and support. No more of this lesser of evils BS that we've had rammed down our throats for the last 25 years.
