Bernie Sanders Joins Calls for Federal Probe of Chicago Police
Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has joined calls for a federal investigation into the Chicago police department, in response to the videotaped shooting of a black teenager by a Chicago police officer.
Mr. Sanderss statement came a day after his rival for the Democratic nomination, Hillary Clinton, broke with Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a longtime ally and former aide to President Bill Clinton, in demanding a federal probe.
I join with those calling for a federal investigation into the practices of the Chicago Police Department, Mr. Sanders said in a statement released by his campaign.
Last week, Cook County authorities charged Officer Jason Van Dyke with first-degree murder in the death of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, who was shot 16 times on Oct. 20, 2014 after a police responded to a report of a man breaking into vehicles. The same day, authorities released, on a judges orders, a graphic police car dashboard cam video of the shooting, prompting outrage but mostly peaceful protests.
