Related: About this forumTime Magazine ‘Person of the Year’ Snubs Bernie Sanders (and hillary) For Donald Trump
I would even have preferred hillary to the chump.
I have no problem with Time Magazine putting Mr. Trump on its list of finalists for person of the year. The person of the year is not based on who we agree with, or disagree with, but on who has had the most influence. There is no doubt Mr. Trump earned his place as a person of great influence. In fact, he has had more influence on the Republican Party than any other Republican, and whether we agree with his views or not he has earned a place on the list of finalists for that reason alone.
I do have a huge problem with Time Magazine editors including Mr. Trump while rejecting Mr. Sanderswho has had more influence than any other candidate on the direction of the Democratic Party. Whether a Democrat supports Hillary Clinton or Mr. Sanders, he has been the candidate driving the debate, and she has been the candidate reacting to his leadership on one great progressive issue after another, time after time, day after day, week after week, month after month.
In a recent column I argued with supporting data that Bernie Sanders can fairly stake a claim to being the most electable candidate for president in either party. I cited polling that supports his right to make this claim, which suggests that in the eyes of voters Mr. Sanders is more electable than Ms. Clinton, Mr. Trump, Ben Carson, Sen. Marco Rubio and Sen. Ted Cruz.
In most polling Mr. Sanders would defeat Mr. Trump by margins that, in some cases, reach epic landslide proportion. Again, I have no problem giving Mr. Trump his due by including him in the list of Time Magazine finalists, but since Mr. Sanders in most cases would defeat Mr. Trump in general election polling, the Sanders influence is not just within his party but across the nation as a wholegiving him a right equal to or greater than Mr. Trump to be included on a list of most influential people.

(45,251 posts)1. Just as Trump begins sliding down in the polls. That was smart.
You can buy the Presidency with your own billions or with donations from other billionaires, but not with millions of small donations.
Message received, TIME, thanks.

The ratings for the debates were due to him alone. Bernie is good but not a ratings winner. Doesn't matter cuz time is barely breathing anymore.
Well at least Berne was elected Person of the year by the people. That still speaks volumes about him.

(51,907 posts)7. Readers Choose Bernie Sanders as Hands-Down Favorite for TIME 'Person of the Year'
http://www.commondreams.org/news/2015/12/07/readers-choose-bernie-sanders-hands-down-favorite-time-person-year
Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders retained a previously established lead and became the hands-down winner of the readers' choice for TIME's "Person of the Year," the magazine announced on Monday, beating out all his political rivals in the U.S. as well as notable individiuals from around
the world by receiving nearly twice the support of the runner-up.
The results of the online poll arrived on the same day that Sanders released a sweeping action plan to deal with planetary climate change.
According to TIME:
The Vermont Senator won with a little more than 10% of the vote when the poll closed Sunday at midnight. Thats well ahead of Pakistani girls education activist Malala Yousafzai, who was in second place at 5.2%, and Pope Francis, TIMEs 2013 Person of the Year, who finished third with 3.7%.
Sanders also placed far ahead President Obama (3.5%) and ahead other 2016 candidates, including Republican Donald Trump (1.8%) and Democratic rival Hillary Clinton (1.4%).
Though the editors of the popular mainstream magazine will announce their own choice for who they believe is the most influential person of 2015 on Wednesday of this week, they acknowledged that
Sanders popularity among those participating in the readers poll has been constant since the survey was opened. "Sanders," the magazine noted, "has helped define the presidential race, calling for big-ticket progressive items from single-payer healthcare to tuition-free public universities. He has mobilized the Democratic Partys liberal base and inspired massive campaign rallies across the country."
