Bernie Sanders
Related: About this forumRobert Reich on FB regarding the differences between Bernie and Hillary
Wrong, said my other friend, also at breakfast. She then went through the list:
"Bernie wants to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. Hillary wants to raise it to $12 an hour.
Bernie wants a single-payer health insurance system. Hillary wants to strengthen Obamacare.
Bernie wants all public higher education to be tuition free. Hillary wants community colleges to be tuition free.
Bernie wants to bust up the biggest banks. Hillary wants to make it more expensive for banks to be very big.
Bernie wants to resurrect the Glass-Staegall Act that separated commercial from investment banking before Bill Clinton joined Republicans in repealing it. Hillary doesnt think its necessary to go that far.
Bernie wants to tax speculative trading on Wall Street. Hillary doesnt think thats necessary, either.
Bernie wants to expand Social Security by raising the cap on income subject to the Social Security payroll tax. Hillary wants to protect Social Security as is.
Bernie wants to allow states to legalize marijuana. Hillary wants to put marijuana on a lower drug enforcement classification but doesnt want it legalized.
Bernie isnt taking money from corporate PACs or Super PACs. Hillary is."
See? she said. The difference is huge. Bernie is leading a movement for fundamental change. Thats why hes generating so much enthusiasm, and why hell win the primaries.
Wrong he said. Bernie's too radical. He doesnt stand a chance.
What do you think?

(45,984 posts)Even if she wins the election, she'll make only cosmetic adjustments to the neoliberal status quo that has brought us steadily increasing income inequality, a disappearing middle class, curtailed civil liberties, more environmental pollution and no action on climate change.
She may stand a chance of being elected, but she doesn't stand a chance of making a needed difference.

(3,233 posts)I'm a Roosevelt Democrat who barely recognizes today's Democratic Party.
I didn't leave the party. The party left me.
Looks like you're voting for the (d)emocrat, too.

(1,370 posts)How did we get from Roosevelt and JFK to the 3rd way? Sounds like a chant ...
It's the elephant in the room and a discussion that needs to happen and if they truly want to be the new moderate Republican party we need a new party!
It looks like there's a lot of people who feel as we do Susana, the Democratic party loses members every election cycle.

(57,936 posts)In the 72 years I have been alive, the most liked candidate has always won in presidential elections.
The exception is 2000 when Gore won the popular vote, and Bush was handed the election by the Supreme Court.
Gore was liked best although he was rather stiff.

That's apparently all "too radical".

(253 posts)Bernie's policy positions are too radical for Americans yet not too radical for most developed nations. My wife is from Colombia, and she has told me that state schools and healthcare are free, but for some reason those ideas are too radical for Americans. What a shame that Americans always seem to vote against their self-interest.
