(10,622 posts)used against him. We talked a little about it once just as the most recent purges started, I do not believe this action has harmed him overmuch. He has a life, a very good and real one.
We will miss him here like the other prominent targets of late all of whom contributed so much substance, truth and humor, but I know he would rather speak his mind and be damned for it than hold his tongue just because some schoolyard bullies who were in good with the principle would have him expelled for it.
I doubt he will give it very much thought and will simply continue doing other things, other places as they suit him, always unmindful of what small minds might think of his thoughts, his words, or his actions; after all he did not post, act or think for them, he did and does such things to try to contribute to the greater good in ways that he feels might matter great or small and damn those that do not approve. Bullies never bothered him, he never gave them any power do so and likely never will.
Perhaps I should have paid more attention to him during that brief discussion about targets and purges because as he clearly chose to face the primary purges without flinching or holding back anything he thought was a true or meaningful thing to say, I chose the path I usually do during purge seasons and just barely if ever posted, pragmatic perhaps, but not very brave of me.
I may email him just to say hi, and try to stay in touch from time to time. I honestly like the guy, we worked briefly together on a separate project that would have been quite successful if timed a bit earlier than it was. I got to know him a little better then.

I have to agree that advocating the sitting out of a campaign, possibly to incite others to behave similarly, is antithetical to being a Democrat.
While the heavy hand of tombstoning seems severe to me, it's not my site. I do see violations on both sides, and it seems that the punishments are not always evenly distributed, which in a political sense could lead to some harboring legitimacy questions.

I don't think they really care if HRC is elected, because they don't care about her either. They don't seem to be the sort of people who give two shits about anyone or anything other than themselves. In fact, I think that probably in reality they are actually supporting republicans. They want HRC to be the nominee because they know Republicans will win over her.

This is all basic human nature stuff. People often act badly when they feel threatened. DWS's actions definitely threatened Sander's supporters interests, and the backlash splattering onto Clinton is doing the same to Clinton supporters. No doubt the admin are human, too.
I've been here a long time...and the past 24 hours has been among the most contentious days ever. This rift is gonna leave a mark.

(2,352 posts)and now, I wonder why anyone would bother with DU any longer. Its function as a news aggregator and source has deteriorated to some kind of GroupThink cult.
I think this is a case of imitation (of DNC and DWS) being the sincerest form of flattery.
It looks to me as if there will be nothing left of this place by November, if not sooner. Why would anyone pay for the privilege of taking abuse?

(11,012 posts)I might (maybe) understand rulings like the one being discussed here. But they are not over yet... we are only in the seventh inning stretch of the lead up to the primaries. We're still singing "If they don't win it's a shaaaammmme!!!"
If Hillary wins the nomination, I will do my part to help avert a meltdown into outright fascism and vote for her (stomach churning though it may be), even though she seems to follow the same general path as the clown car, albeit a bit more slowly and with some concessions to somewhat more liberal social mores.
I wonder, what happens to DU when (I guess I should say "if" but I believe) Bernie wins Democratic nomination? Several of the most effective voices for Bernie have been silenced, either officially or because those voices could no longer tolerate the obnoxiousness of a few who stalked them.
Those voices will be needed. And I believe they are needed even now.
All I know is that for the first time since Bobby Kennedy (and I was too young to vote back then), I have hope for a change in direction for this county. I'm realistic enough to understand that turning the ship of state into 180 degree turn (unless it really is a pendulum) is a difficult and time consuming operation, but that that turn needs to start somewhere, sometime or it will never happen. I think January, 2017 is not a moment too soon (and maybe much too late) to begin that turn.

I may give it a try over there. This place has been overrun by snide fools who can't acknowledge when they are wrong. Didn't used to be that way. Been coming here almost 15 years, and used Ignore for the first time last week. Some are here just to wreck it - incapable of a real conversation.

(12,977 posts)There was a certain amount of wackiness in the early years. 9/11 trutherism. Even Bilderberg conspiracy theories that somehow snuck in from the John Birch Society corners of the web. But it was also a lot more wide open and freewheeling.
When that started to change, I put it down to the site wanting to go more mainstream and tidy up its hair and makeup to look respectable. And I put the hiding away of Israel/Palestine threads as an attempt to keep the place from ripping itself apart.
But whether or not the intentions were good -- well, you know what they say about the road to Hell. And I fear that's where we find ourselves.
