While in Vegas, O’Malley to stand with workers seeking to unionize at Trump’s hotel.WaPo

Democratic White House hopeful Martin O’Malley plans a little showmanship of his own here Wednesday: He has scheduled a news conference in front of Donald Trump’s gold-plated hotel tower to voice solidarity with workers there trying to unionize.

O’Malley, the former Maryland governor, will be joined by leaders of Culinary Workers Union Local 226, a politically potent force in Nevada’s early caucuses whose endorsement is being highly sought by Democrats angling for their party’s presidential nomination.

The union, whose membership is heavily Latino, is in a pitched battle with Trump, the Republican presidential frontrunner, over allowing hotel and casino workers to join the culinary union and a sister organization for bartenders. . .

Prior to the news conference, O’Malley is scheduled to appear at the Luxor hotel and casino, where the Nevada AFL-CIO is holding a statewide convention. Democratic front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) appeared before the labor group Tuesday, and both were warmly received, according to people who attended the closed-press addresses.

It’s a sure bet that O’Malley, who is lagging behind Clinton and Sanders in the polls, will also have something to say about Trump’s recently released plan to crack down on illegal immigration. Last month, O’Malley released his own plan, which moves in the opposite direction, seeking to limit deportations through further executive action and to push Congress to adopt comprehensive immigration reform.
