Martin O'Malley says he isn't going anywhere.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley was defiant Monday, imploring his supporters to "hold strong" and vowing that he would continue his long-shot bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.

"We're in this all the way," O'Malley said as he was repeatedly asked by a reporter whether he would remain in the race with a distant third-place finish here. How the votes turn out in Iowa on Monday can shape the remainder of primary season.

He added that he would "beat expectations" and take that momentum to the early voting states of New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina and "win this nomination."

O'Malley's campaign took out a $500,000 loan in December to remain solvent, according to Federal Election Commission filings, and some staffers here have been working without pay.

"Our strategy was to put everything we have as a challenging candidate into these early races," O'Malley told Mashable Monday, when asked about his campaign's finances. "My candidacy is in the hands of the voters in these early states."

"Once the people of Iowa shift the dynamic in this race, then that will address the money that we need to go on to the other races," O'Malley said. "We've seen it happen time and again with other candidates."
