Washington Post-Joe Biden's message to Donald Trump: I'm no socialist.

Biden’s implicit argument to Democrats, meantime, is he has embraced enough of the policies animating the party’s ascendant left to make him acceptable as the standard-bearer — but not enough to alienate the working class voters the party desperately wants to win back in 2020.

He has embraced raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, a posture that advances on Hillary Clinton’s stutter-step approach to raising wages in 2016, and he has touted a plan to allow anyone to go to community college free.

But he has spurned others, calling for improvements to Obamacare but declining to back a Medicare-for-all plan backed by many of his party’s 2020 candidates. Rather than railing on the wealthy, he takes pains to point out they, too, are good people. While he has talked about the need to address climate change, he has yet to embrace anything approaching the Green New Deal.....

Her sentiment was echoed at Biden’s first public campaign event in Pittsburgh during his introduction by the head of the international firefighter’s union.

“Let me shoot straight with you, and this might not be popular in parts of the Democratic Party,” said union president, Harold Schaitberger. “We can’t have a nominee that’s too far left. It’s just that simple. A candidate that has high-minded ideals, maybe honorable ideas, but little chance of winning.”

He's saying too far left has little chance of winning, but he makes clear that those ideas aren't wacky...they are honorable.

ALL the ideas by all the candidates are honorable. So we will nominate someone with honorable ideas.

25. If the economy is good, trump can win if we pick a weak candidate

We have to defeat trump. There is a very good chance that trump will win if we pick a weak or unsafe choice. There are posters who believe that we can nominate the most liberal/socialist nominee as possible and that candidate will easily win because everyone hates trump. It is their position that this is a historic opportunity to nominate someone would otherwise not be electable.

From Larry Sabato https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/the-economy-got-nixon-reagan-and-bush-reelected-it-could-do-it-for-trump-too/2019/04/23/b8920d34-65e6-11e9-a1b6-b29b90efa879_story.html?utm_term=.a35b315730d2

Ultimately, Trump may turn out to be at the mercy of conventional factors. In 2016, academic predictive models based on fundamentals such as the state of the economy suggested that Trump, or any other Republican candidate, was in position to win the election or come very close. This time, such models (once they become operative next year) could make Trump the early favorite despite his poor approval ratings.

Credit the powers of incumbency and a strong economy, the state of which may matter more to Trump’s odds than nearly anything else. Incumbency and the economy, among other matters, ended up being more than enough for Nixon, Reagan and Bush. Despite Trump’s unprecedented outlandishness, that same combination might work for him, too.

Most POTUS are re-elected if the economy is good. Here is a scary study that shows this

There are good reasons to doubt this study

I do not believe that trump is assured of winning. If we want to win, Democrats need to nominate a strong nominee who is NOT too far out of the mainstream

I don’t believe any in the house are. AOC actually comes very close, possibly crossing the line. While I don’t agree with how she takes some of her shots I think she is probably one of the best spokespersons we have seen at that level when it comes to socializing more parts of our economy.

I refuse to believe that a candidate that has big ideals can't win. We wouldn't have social security and Medicare without big ideas. Having a good messenger is the important thing. If you start big, sometimes when you have to compromise the compromise won't bring us so far to the right. I will certainly root and vote for Biden if he is our nominee, however.

As for socialism, the Repukes now label anything that helps those who aren't rich as socialist.

Don’t you think you have a good perspective of the history you have lived. The torch is passed as younger generations age and vote in higher percentages. At our age we have enough time behind us to understand that the youthful rising is little more than smaller percentages of loud and energetic people. That’s not a knock. It’s a proven trend.

You are the present.

Ruben Bolling recently ran a cartoon titled “Socialist Invaders From The Future”. In it Bernie, Elizabeth Warren, And AOC time travel back to the 50s. They try to scare a young 50s couple with talk of an 80% top tax rate.....puzzled the couple says you lowered it from the 91% it is now? They then say they will introduce a humane and expanded system for refugees to app,y for asylum here. The 50s Couple says we have that now. And so on. AOC , Bernie, And Warren give up trying to scare them.

Eisenhower was a republican who instituted those top tax rates.

My how things and perceptions have changed.
