Bernie Sanders declines to back reparations

“There are better ways to do that than just writing out a check.”

The early 2020 Democratic primary has been occupied lately by a surprisingly polarizing question: Should the United States offer restitution to the descendants of slaves in the form of reparations? Already, several candidates — notably Sens. Kamala Harris (D-CA), Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) — have said yes.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) isn’t so sure.

“I think what we have got to do is pay attention to distressed communities: black communities, Latino communities, and white communities, and as president, I pledge to do that,” Sanders said when asked about the issue on ABC’s The View on Friday.

I want to know. And one other thing.....

“I think that right now, our job is to address the crises facing the American people and our communities

How about you toughening up on Russia? That is a crisis facing the whole country.

...he point blank asked the interviewer what they meant by reparations, because there are various views on it, and they just said “money”. Then he went on with his view and how there are better ways than just writing a check.

It is ok to be against reparations but people need specifics as to why.

"Pay attention to distressed communities" is a platitude without a detailed policy proposal explaining how it will all work and why it is better than what others are proposing.

What does it mean he asks. If it’s money, how is it to be calculated? A one off payment? A recurring tax credit?

And the politics is absolutely crazy. The reddest of red meat to the RW base.
