Speaking with The Daily Shows Trevor Noah on Wednesday, 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris said she will never regret prosecuting rapists and molesters. Harris comments were in response to Noah asking about the controversy sparked by Harris criminal justice record.
You have come under criticism recently where people say you had some programs that some feel targeted minorities or communities that didnt have the means, you know, for instance, truancy programs where mothers were threatened with prison because their children werent going to school, werent where they were supposed to be, Noah noted.
He then asked Harris what was the biggest thing that changed the way she saw criminal reform.
Harris replied:
She then added: We also know and I was born knowing that this system of criminal justice in this country needs reform.

(428 posts)Yes, I'm sure she put away a lot of bad people, as prosecutor's are tasked with doing. But she didn't answer what has changed or what changed her mind about those shitty policies that Noah mentioned or if she feels any remorse over that. He wasn't asking if she felt remorse over putting away murderers or rapists, but whether she had any remorse over the other shitty, racist policies.
That whole aspect of her past isn't a deal breaker for me (if at this point there are any deal breakers considering what we are up against), although it is a point of concern. But I do think she probably needs to come up with a better response to that general question than the straw man argument of also having put away a lot of bad people.
Even if that response was that she didn't always agree with the law but that it was her job to enforce and prosecute (even if that answer is not entirely true given a prosecutor's discretion), I think it would be better than this answer.
But then again that is the advantage to starting this process early and working through the kinks, so......good luck to her.

(10,832 posts)The piece gives a 360 view of Harris, her prosecutorial history and the criticisms swirling around that period, her present stance on justice reform and her Senate work to date. Anyone with an extensive work history will be put under the microscope but it seems to me that Harris is someone who has worked inside the system and made reform inroads to varying degrees in a time when 'crack-downs' were a thing. Personally, I'm more interested where she is now. I think her answer to Trevor Noah shows pragmatism (not a dirty word), grit and honesty.
For me, she comes across as a tough, smart woman who has had to do a lot of balancing acts. Which is what politics requires if you're going to rise to the upper echelons of power. I'm definitely keeping my eye on her because she has the mark of a true winner.

(7,541 posts)As a person that spent way too much time on the wrong side of steel bars in my younger days (blowing my cover), I would already have a very difficult time voting in a primary for a former DA, and she just made it more difficult by choosing the standard politician's non-answer. Just about what I would have expected from a Senator (another strike against her IMO) as I'm not a big fan of the Senate either.
I have a hard time believing that her idea of criminal justice reform comes anywhere near to mine.
