Fox News is the unlikely new power player in the 2020 Democratic primary

Meet the new media player in Democratic Party politics. Fox News.

Blocked from participating in the lineup of official Democratic debates scheduled for the 2020 presidential cycle, the network that appeals to conservative-leaning voters has muscled its way into the process by offering candidates a valuable commodity: Air time during televised town halls.

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont was the first Democratic contender to take up the Fox invitation last month in Pennsylvania.
And Wednesday at the Grain Exchange in Milwaukee, before an invited audience in the city that's hosting the 2020 Democratic National Convention, U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota gets her 60 minutes on Fox. The event begins at 5:30 p.m.

So, why would Democratic candidates go on a network that has been accused of having close ties to President Donald Trump's administration?
"I think you have to reach everyone," Klobuchar said.

"And I've always believed in my runs for office and in my governing style that you go not just where it's comfortable but you go where it's uncomfortable and that includes on Fox News," she told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

This presidential cycle has been punctuated by made-for-TV town halls — with CNN even holding five on one night.

Town halls give the candidates an unscripted and relatively unfiltered way to reach hundreds of thousands, if not millions of voters at a time.

There will be more Democratic presidential town halls on Fox News.

South Bend Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg and U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York have scheduled town halls with the network. MacCallum said the network has reached out to all the other campaigns.

As for Sanders, his numbers have dropped considerably since his visit to Fox. I doubt there's a link, but his appearance there also doesn't seem to have helped his campaign in any measurable way.

Personally, I think it's essentially state TV and that we shouldn't bother with them, but that's just my opinion. Others disagree, and that's fine.

With Biden in the race, he has bigger problems than trying to reach Fox News viewers.

5. What if Fox Town Halls are reaching Independents and Romney Republicans?

Are republicans being counted in all these polls showing a 30% Biden primary lead? They can't be, right?

What about independents? It has to be about people that claim to be likely to vote in a Democratic primary, right?

Is it possible appearing on Fox Town Halls gives you exposure that would help in the General election, but not the primaries?

If that is the case, then our leading candidates for the nomination especially should all appear at Fox Town Halls

Fox can just make something up or pick a democratic soundbite and surround it with Hannity, Carlson, etc. coverage to use it against the dem. They don't need a democrat to appear to get fodder.

However, Bernie did a good job of taking his Fox appearance to further his message. He didn't moderate or change it for the Fox audience. I don't really care how his appearance is portrayed by the network itself. It doesn't matter.

If anything, Sanders blazed the trail to use Fox News' reach to his advantage.

I don't think the exposure to Fox's viewers matters as much as the publicity that candidates are getting by walking into the lion's den. If anything, democrats are the power brokers by taking more than an hour of Fox's airtime to further their message beyond Fox.

15. One of Perez's few mistakes so far was to not have Fox do a debate.
Wed May 8, 2019, 09:24 PM
May 2019

Some late debates don't have a network, so maybe Fox will get one. But as is, their move on the town halls was clever. If democratic candidates use the airtime well, they can undercut every argument for Trump.

What Perez should have done, IMO, was sit down with Fox and lay out the law on what hosting a debate entails.

16. I'm in favor of candidates going on Fox individually, but not having Fox do a debate.
Wed May 8, 2019, 10:09 PM
May 2019

There's no way to make sure Fox will be even-handed. Perez can lay down the law all he wants, but the debates are live so Fox controls what actually happens.

Town halls are different. The individual candidate has the choice and accepts whatever risks or benefits there are to appearing.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
