Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez refuses to back Bernie Sanders for 2020 election run against Trump

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has refused to endorse Bernie Sanders for the 2020 Democratic nomination, despite working on the senator’s first presidential campaign.

A spokesperson for Ms Ocasio-Cortez, like Mr Sanders a self-described democratic socialist, refused to comment directly on the 77-year-old’s Tuesday announcement he is running for a second time.

“We’re excited to see so many progressives in the race,” spokesperson Corbin Trent said. “We’re not thinking at all about the next election.”

Any endorsement by Ms Ocasio-Cortez is likely to be influential on the outcome of the race, thanks to her massive support among the grassroots of the party.

But the 29-year-old, a congresswoman for New York, is unlikely to offer an endorsement before her state's Democratic primary next year, and may even permanently withhold any explicit support for a single candidate.

David Axelrod, Mr. Obama’s former chief strategist, told the group they should expect no such directive. Mr. Axelrod confirmed in an interview that he briefed the gathering, recalling: “They asked me about Obama endorsing. I said, ‘I don’t imagine he will.’”

Mr. Axelrod said he had been sharing his own perspective, not speaking as an official Obama emissary. But his forecast matches what Mr. Obama has told friends and likely presidential candidates in private: that he does not see it as his role to settle the 2020 nomination, and prefers to let the primary unfold as a contest of ideas. Michelle Obama, the former first lady, also has no plans to endorse a candidate, a person familiar with her thinking said.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/18/us/politics/obama-2020-democratic-candidates.html

Those are comments from friends not directly from Pres O. I think he still might endorse depending on how things play out.

a question. The spokesperson says AOC has not endorsed anyone at this point essentially. And suddenly it's a rejection, a rebuke of Bernie Sanders.

Did Sanders even ask for an endorsement at this point? Probably not.

Meh.

That will be way too late for Bernie. Super Tuesday is March 3. He needs help upfront if he has any chance at all of winning this thing.

Wonder if that will have any impact on when or whether she endorses Bernie. I think AOC needs to put some distance between the Our Revolution folks and herself. Maybe this helps in that regard.

You would think she would have something positive to say about her fellow Democratic Socialist. She is certainly not afraid to be outspoken in her opinions on other matters.

You would think she would have made some specific mention of his announcement. After all he is the Grand Master of Democratic Socialists and she is the Democratic Socialists' rising star. Odd she remains silent.

It tells me she is starting to realize her future does not lie with Sanders and his "Our Revolution" movement. Which I will commend her for that.

she knows that Nancy Pelosi is a better mentor than Bernie will ever become.

Yes AOC is idealistic. But she's smart. At the end of her career, she'll want it to look more like Nancy's, Maxine's, Hillarys', not so much Bernie's. I suppose, unless he were to become president.

Sorry, but fresh is fresh. And those ladies are fresh.
