Related: About this forumBiden campaign confirms he supports controversial abortion rule: report
Campaign aides told NBC News that the 2020 presidential hopeful still supports the Hyde Amendment, which has prevented government health programs like Medicaid from paying for abortions except in cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the woman.
Bidens campaign did say that the former Vice President would be open to repealing the amendment if abortion access currently protected under Roe v. Wade was threatened.
The support appears to differ from what Biden told an American Civil Liberties Union volunteer when asked about the Hyde Amendment last month.
It cant stay, he said.

(31,879 posts)I don't want anything to upset the apple cart in my state. Murphy, the Assembly, and the Senate are focused on expanding health care and protecting the right to abort in our state. I don't want 'regressives' in Mississippi having the tiniest sliver of opportunity to tell us what to do with our money.
We are nothing like them, never will be, they can come together with us in 2020 (they won't) -
But the Mississippi State flag will still not be flown in Liberty State Park.

(22,431 posts)Harris, Gillibrand, Klobuchar and Warren are currently co-sponsoring legislation to block the Hyde Amendment, and several of them have explicitly said that repealing Hyde is part of their policy plans.
Sanders has called for the repeal of Hyde but has not signed on to current legislation, nor has Booker. O'Rourke has supported a similar House measure in the past and Buttigieg has spoken against Hyde.

(2,753 posts)Repeal Hyde Amendment: The Hyde Amendment, which prohibits spending federal funds on abortion services, disproportionately impacts women of color and women in underserved communities. Any woman who gets her care or insurance through the federal government must be covered for all pregnancy-related care, including abortion.

(36,885 posts)We believe unequivocally, like the majority of Americans, that every woman should have access to quality reproductive health care services, including safe and legal abortionregardless of where she lives, how much money she makes, or how she is insured. We believe that reproductive health is core to women's, men's, and young people's health and well being. We will continue to stand up to Republican efforts to defund Planned Parenthood health centers, which provide critical health services to millions of people. We will continue to opposeand seek to overturnfederal and state laws and policies that impede a woman's access to abortion, including by repealing the Hyde Amendment.[26]
Hillary Clinton advocated for a repeal of the Hyde Amendment throughout her 2016 Presidential campaign. She was quoted as saying, "Any right that requires you to take extraordinary measures to access it is no right at all" at a campaign rally in New Hampshire.[27] The Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Tim Kaine reportedly stood with his running mate on the issue, despite formerly having been a supporter of the Hyde Amendment.[28]

(92,394 posts)stopper for me in my support for him.
This came from his campaign spokes people, and is counter to what he previously told the ACLU, so I will wait a day for this to clear up, but I am not too optimistic
This amendment is a direct attack against poor women.
I will give a day for before doing anything, but if his position stands on not repealing the Hyde Amendment, then my support will go to Harris, who I am already also donating to, or undecided.
I have also wrote to his campaign to ask for confirmation.
Waiting for a reply

(92,394 posts)wait to hear from him directly for confirmation, but with the attacks to over turn Roe going on right now, and he comes out with this, its the sane in my view
I will see what happens in the next day. When you have NARL and PP for its repeal, he is on the wrong side
As to your accusation, it was strong, donated several hundred dollars to his campaign so far, and have been a strong defender of the lies and distortions made against him, but this is a big deal for me

Abortion seems to attract a lot of single issue voters on both sides of the political spectrum.
Also if youre donating to multiple campaigns thats generally not an indicator of strong support.

There are some positions that are just intrinsic to being Democratic. If a candidate took a position against marriage equality, I'd have to draw a line. I'm just glad we have a big field of wonderful alternatives.

(37,748 posts)"If one issue sways your support you are in fact a single issue voter."
That's not accurate. At all.
But by all means... support the specious premise with evidence. I'd certainly be intrigued if nothing else. (or you can simply make an excuse why it's too difficult or bothersome to do so)

(62,444 posts)If a candidate said, "I intend to launch a nuclear attack on Canada the moment I am sworn in" then would you simply weigh that "nuke Canada" policy among the other positions held by that candidate?
Or, like any rational human, would you say "Oh, hell no, I'm not voting for him."
So, admit it, you are a single issue voter, and your single issue is whether or not to launch a nuclear attack on Canada. Amirite?

(22,431 posts)when the life of the pregnant person is at risk, or in cases of rape or incest. In the past, Biden, has also voted against allowing federal funds to pay for abortions in the cases of rape and incest.
This directly affects 1 in 5 people of childbearing age in the United States. It's a shitty policy, no matter who supports it.

(2,701 posts)election. It's near impossible that they would ever rule to have this repealed. This being the case, Biden's stance on this issue does not hold much weight. The scale is unlikely to be tipped in the favor of the pro-appeal camp, so he should be allowed the right to stand by his belief, in this instance.

(82,383 posts)It is very far away. In fact, the right to choice itself may already be lost for the foreseeable future. Thanks to one issue voters on the other side. The last thing we need to worry about in a candidate. It's bad enough to be a one issue voter, but to make this sub issue matter when it is not likely to change is silly.
