BY RACHEL FRAZIN - 06/05/19 11:03 AM EDT
Pro-choice advocacy group NARAL decried former Vice President Joe Biden's support for the Hyde Amendment, which prevents using federal funds to cover certain abortion costs.
"Theres NO political or ideological excuse for @JoeBidens support for the Hyde Amendment, which translates into discrimination against poor women and women of color plain and simple," the group tweeted Wednesday. "His position further endangers people already facing enormous hurdles."

"At a time where the fundamental freedoms enshrined in Roe are under attack, the 2020 Democratic field has coalesced around the Partys core values -- support for abortion rights, and the basic truth that reproductive freedom is fundamental to the pursuit of equality and economic security in this country," NARAL said in a statement.
"Differentiating himself from the field this way will not earn Joe Biden any political points and will bring harm to women who are already most vulnerable, the group added.

(92,397 posts)this is the case
I went to his website and emailed him for confirmation
I am one step away from dropping my support from him
This is counter to what he told the ACLU previously so I will give it a day to see if he directly confirms it

I would rather Biden not hold this viewpoint. It hurts women without means. Denouncing it would open the opportunity to talk about pro-women initiatives he will take while in office.

Biden needs to admit this was an error in judgement and that he will correct this punishment of marginalized women should he become president.

That Joe Biden continues to support it is one of many reasons why he is NOT among my top choices.

(41,832 posts)When some ass starts ranting about "my tax money going for abortions" one can argue back, "Your taxes don't go to pay for abortion"
I can see why some back it. It doesn't disallow money for other reproductive services.

Its wrong. Bidens support for Hyde indicates his position on abortion rights is superficial posturing.

So you are spot on. It's completely political, and the group it targets for exclusion from federal tax dollars is poor women who need reproductive healthcare.
As long as democrats treat abortion as some kind of taboo, then people will think of it as taboo. IMHO, the Hyde amendment is short-sighted and creates lasting damage to the greater cause of reproductive freedom.

(112 posts)Henry Hyde was a pedophile. Hyde Amendment hurts poor women.
The best way to protect womens rights is by electing a woman President. We cant depend on a male septuagenarian to do it.
Biden is out of touch on this issue.

(15,512 posts)and is still necessary for that purpose. Otherwise the whole thing gets re-litigated by employers opposed to abortion and the Supreme Court gets to review its 5-4 2012 decision upholding the ACA. And it would probably reach a different decision this time.

(13,161 posts)By like 10 years or so. Other than that you might have a point.
The ACA also has an explicit carve out for abortions, because some Dino Senator wouldnt vote for it without it, if I remember correctly.
Regardless, in both cases this is despicable, and considering the all out assault on womens rights by the fascists, liberals need to present a solid front, across the board, clearly supporting abortion rights.

(22,913 posts)There are many things positive that can said about him, but this stance isn't one of them. The Hyde Amendment is not exactly an obscure piece of legislation, nor is its impact on women, in particular economically disadvantaged women, minimal. This is a huge negative mark on Biden's record, and it is not something being dredged up from decades ago. This is now.
