Dude is flexible; I will give him that. He now sees where his party is on this issue. Kudos.

(CNN) Former Vice President Joe Biden says he now wants to throw out the Hyde Amendment, dropping his long-held support for the measure that blocks federal funds from being used for most abortions amid criticism from his 2020 Democratic rivals.

"If I believe health care is a right, as I do, I can no longer support an amendment that makes that right dependent on someone's ZIP code," he said.

The Hyde Amendment is a four-decade-old ban on federal dollars being used for abortions except in cases of rape, incest or when the woman's life is in danger.

Biden's campaign on Wednesday said he still supported the Hyde Amendment -- a position that put him to the right of all other leading 2020 Democratic contenders, as well as Hillary Clinton and the party's platform in 2016.

Credit to Joe Biden here. He's late to the party, but better late than never.

In the words of Mohandas Gandhi, "There go my people, and I must follow them, for I am their leader."

Joe heard us and moved our way. I have no problem with that, even if I am a little bitter about how long it took for him to come around.

It took 24 hours to change Biden’s opinion. Lets take a lesson from this and hold our candidates feet to the fire on the issues we care about. This is how party platforms are built.

I've posted this a few times.. but I'm just so grateful Dude can listen!

I sent a tweet out to Cedric Richmond this morning..

I'm for Biden now.. but please tell him that he shouldn't be basing political decisions on "religion". Separation of Church and State. Thank you
.
And, here's Biden's statement..

trying to paint his stance as either necessary (ie. hordes of pro-life, pro forced-birther indies and Rethugs would vote for him due to that) or that it was right thing to do because some poll a few years ago said it was the stance of a majority of Americans (which I might add takes leading from behind to another level). All overlaid and marinated with the usual 'only Biden can win the general' palaver.

IF they truly believe either/or of the above rationales, then I await their condemnation of his flipping. (Pro tip, not holding my breath)

Edited to add a 3rd (and by far most disingenuous) rationale, that being the ludicrous 'I'm glad Biden is standing up for what he believes -- it shows strength' pure tosh.

And Democrats often do - like all intelligent people.

Republicans, on the other hand, sometimes make me question the fact of evolution altogether.

But, I will believe it when I see genuine regret for all of his past anti-abortion positions and votes.
Especially the 2003 "partial birth" abortion ban.

It's nice to see voters have influence but this is a little late in the game.
In Missouri a law just went into effect that requires women to have an unnecessary pelvic exam before a medication induced abortion.
Every little antichioce, anti- abortion, anti- woman action from policy makers was a step that brought us to this point.
I'm glad we have plenty of candidates who got it right the first time and have not wavered.

over 50 years that, if he's not already moved on, need to be reconsidered. And then do it.

One thing I'm wondering that may have contributed is that the religious right is even more powerful today than 40 years ago and affecting conservative attitudes as much or more than when they affected the original legislation. He may have been thinking right before pulling out and forgot to look around his own left. For sure he was surprised by what happened when he didn't.

As you say he's late to the party, but his heart's in the right place.
