Bill Maher: Buttigieg a 'little too young' to be president

BY JUSTIN WISE - 06/12/19 10:10 AM EDT

Comedian and commentator Bill Maher on Tuesday said South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg "is a little too young" to be president while pushing pack against criticism of former Vice President Joe Biden.

“This is the only country that I can think of in history who doesn’t seem to get something very fundamental, which is that in general people older are wiser," Maher, who hosts HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” said on CNN's "Cumo Prime Time." "That’s the tradeoff of life. Of course there are exceptions. There are dumb old people and smart young people. But in general, yes, I’m OK with someone who has learned and grown and seen a lot and has experienced it and has seen patterns."

"I like Mayor Pete but I do think 37 is a little too young," Maher said. "A little bit.”

The comments from Maher came as he and CNN host Chris Cuomo talked about Biden's record as a public servant and the criticism he's received for some of the past positions he's taken. Maher acknowledged that Biden was "rotten" to Anita Hill while leading congressional hearings on her sexual harassment accusation against then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas.

Nothing wrong with experience (Truman, Nixon {well, his didn't help him!}, Clinton as Governor, Bush as VP, Bush II as Governor), but how well did that work out? Less experience: Obama (2 years as Senator), IQ45 (70 years as a dick).
So, obviously, experience alone isn't a qualifier or dis-qualifier.
What about "smarts?"
Truman (our last president to not attend college): So well read and could quote history without having to write things on his hand!
Clinton: Rhodes Scholar
IQ45: Well, the nickname he's earned says it all!

Mayor Pete: Tons of smarts and I'd vote for him ANY DAY!!!!

a Congressional district or Senate race that's your make believe world, but the rest of live in the real world.

A Congressperson represents about 700,000 people.
A Senator represents the whole state and must get millions of votes.
That is a lot more than 100K
So yes, in a district-wide, statewide, or nationwide election, Pete is UNPROVEN.

There is a reason no Congressperson has won the presidency in the modern era or the last 150 years.

I come from a town in CT with 90K people.

They both have limited experience, or as they call it in career counseling "non-traditional backgrounds." Both will have proven themselves against the odds and against a field of much more experienced politicians. Both will start with 40-45% of the vote and duke it out for the remaining few centrists while they try to motivate their base. Whatever criteria those voters use to decide, experience is not likely to be one of them.

All other factors -Russia, cheating, electoral college etc. will work against every other Democrat the same way.

This is a case of wanting to start out at the top. Pete is impressive in many ways but is running mostly on a platform of "out with the old and in with the new". Convenient for him at his age but really just a meaningless campaign slogan. He is a mayor of a small city who has run once - and lost - on a statewide level. He needs to run for Congress and develop a strategy to solving problems that is centered on specifics.

If I were to vote in a presidential

I see a lot of "we need to do this or that" generalities like "Hold the gun industry accountable" with occasional specifics like "Ban military-style assault weapons" that are already part of any Democratic candidates lexicon. I don't see a reason why he should be elevated above many other experienced candidates based on a compelling worldview that includes specifics on how to implement that perspective. Why vote for him in the primaries? Because it's "time for a new generation of leadership in America" slogan? How will his "new generation leadership" be better than the other older, experienced and accomplished candidates Democrats already have. I see no compelling reason to believe that. Rather I see someone wanting to start out at the top.

and far more military experience.

Pete makes a good point when he says mayors have to be visible and accountable to their constituents, which is something you don’t often see in presidents. Mayors have to handle a myriad of issues that legislators might never address, which gives them a broader perspective on the role and scope of government in people’s lives; they see the consequences of their decisions with an immediacy that someone in higher levels of government might not. (Pete says this better than I can. I’m sure he will address this in the debates.)

The last two Democratic presidents have been brilliant scholars, and we did well under them.

Trump is a decade older, and he’s an idiot.

Teddy Roosevelt and JFK were pretty good presidents, despite not being particularly old. Reagan was very old indeed, and he was terrible.

I disagree with the premise that age makes anyone more fit for the office. Evidence suggests otherwise.

He has a keen mind. That's just a fact.

One doesn't have to be very smart to be President, though. Although that helps.

63 would be a good age for a Presidential candidate. 77-81 is another matter.

somewhat middle sized city may not be the experience one has with the senate or house of representatives, but when the number of bills being passed by either house (the house since in democratic control has been passing quite a few bills compared to the republican controlled senate) is next to zero, and it seems most of these senators' time is being spend in sitting on committees mouthing off (not the democratic senators/representations), I'd say running a city via the job of mayor is great experience.

And with the idiot rump being 72 years old?! Look at what this idiot has done in a little over 2+ years. A giant tax break for his 1%ers buddies, and that's about it. He's mouthed off at just about everybody, no one wants to deal with motor mouth/gutter mouth, and he failing in every category of dealing with effective and efficient government. His actions are not planned/coordinated as recent press articles have mentioned and thus, he fails at everything. He's insulting our allies right and left, and his ego and personal cravings are getting in the way.

Crap, I almost wish a 12 year old girl scout or boy scout is president. They would do a far better job than worthless rump. But, being realistic, I'll take Pete, at 37 years old. If the framers of the constitution and our amendments thought that 37 years old is too young to be president, they would have said so.

They didn't. We need at minimum, NO trump. Doubled and redoubled.

Age is not equated with wisdom...believe me, I've (and we all have at DU) known some idiots older than I and younger than I, do stupid and idiotic things.

He's crackerjack smart. Being smart doesn't mean you're right. I just know that he's very intelligent and must remember everything he's ever read. He knows facts and dates and all sorts of things about politics that even political pundits don't remember.

I think he's so funny. I don't agree with everything he says, but there's no funnier political satirist in the world.

Stephen Robinson's column gets it exactly right: jerk-offs like Maher's principle gripe against trump is that he was such a shitty candidate that he forced them to cast votes for Hillary, and they can't get over it.

And quit watching Maher's show! He is unworthy of the ratings you're giving him.

61. Trump is 73. He's wiser? Reagan had Alzheimer's at 75. Was he wiser?
Thu Jun 13, 2019, 01:35 AM
Jun 2019

It's not that a candidate is older (in his 60s). It's that he really is "getting on in years," as they say. No one has ever been elected President at Biden's age (he'll be 77 at election time, 81 at end of 4 years). Reminder: Reagan was 70, was re-elected at 74, and had the symptoms of Alzheimer's such that they couldn't hide it well in his second term. Was it wise for him to run for re-election?

It's not being mean or discriminatory to Biden. It really is a valid issue to many people. But it looks like he's going to be the nominee, so it is what it is. They'll keep his forgetfulness and other things a secret as much as they can, like they did for Reagan. But be aware, since he'll be vulnerable to being easily manipulated. Jill, nice and protective as she is, may not be an iron maiden like Nancy Reagan, who I think was able to keep the bears at bay.

When Reagan testified before Congress on the Iran-Contra Affair, he said "I don't remember" to many questions. People thought he was lying, but as it turned out, he probably really didn't remember much of what had happened.
