Bernie Sanders, channeling FDR, argues case for Democratic Socialism, pitches 'economic

Bill of Rights'

(snip)

“It is my very strong belief that the United States must reject that path of hatred and divisiveness, and instead find the moral conviction to choose a different path, a higher path, a path of compassion, justice and love,” Sanders said to a packed room of more than 400 supporters at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. “And that is the path that I call democratic socialism.”

(snip)

"We must take the next step forward and guarantee every man, woman and child in our country basic economic rights – the right to quality health care, the right to as much education as one needs to succeed in our society, the right to a decent job, the right to affordable housing, the right to a secure retirement and the right to live in a clean environment," Sanders said. "We must recognize that in the 21st century, in the wealthiest country in the history of the world, economic rights are human rights."

(snip)

As he railed against politics "that have encouraged and subsidized unbridled corporate greed" leading to "an economy that is fundamentally broken and grotesquely unfair," the senator called upon Roosevelt, recalling that his leadership during The Great Depression that faced "scare tactics" similar to those Sanders' argued were multiplying today, such as xenophobia, racism and anti-Semitism.

He later expanded on Roosevelt's 1944 proposed "Second Bill of Rights," by proposing an "Economic Bill of Rights," one which includes "a decent job that pays a living wage," "quality health care," "complete education," "affordable housing," "a clean environment" and "a secure retirement."

I do not think that the Democratic Party can win with a socialist on the ticket

It’s a risky move, not least because he has some convincing to do — among his 2020 Democratic field and the whole country. “Should the Democratic Party embrace socialism?” is at the heart of its debate about what kind of candidate can beat President Trump.

Let’s start with the whole country. Less than half of Americans say they’d vote for a socialist for president. More say they’d vote for an atheist or Muslim, according to a Gallup survey in May. That’s the same as 2015 when Sanders first launched his presidency, despite his efforts during that campaign to warm Americans up to socialism. A Monmouth University survey in April finds 57 percent of Americans think socialism is not compatible with American values.....

“If we’re not careful, we’re going to end up reelecting the worst president in American history,” said former Colorado governor John Hickenlooper. (He got booed by a gathering of Democrats in San Francisco for saying that.) It’s also notable that the most vocal proponents of dropping socialism from the campaign trail are at the bottom of the polls right now....

Republicans are downright giddy about all this. What’s a scarier term to the American public than “socialist”? And with one of the leaders in the Democratic Party embracing it, their pitch to voters that Democrats want to radically change the country to something unrecognizable just got a lot easier.

His attempt to include and work with them failed. It's not to much to say they LOATHED FDR, the New Deal programs, and the Democratic Party coalition that made it possible.

They felt he betrayed their chance at a real revolution (socialists, communists and fascists were all fighting for that in that era). They tried to defeat him at the polls so they could block and destroy the New Deal. Of course they failed (as always), and the more successful the New Deal was, the more they despised it.

Think their counterparts today and their attitude toward today's Democratic Party and the ACA, and you'll get something of the picture.

plan you don’t like. Or it’s what republicans say when democrats are in power.

Bernie explains where the money will come from. You may not like his answer, but I have heard him address it.

We’re a big country. Nothing is going to have a small price tag.

No one comes close to the amounts we need for the programs we want.
And only one, Yang, proposes a VAT, which Europe & other countries use very well to fund their programs. Everyone pays. Here, not nearly enough pay or will pay under anyones programs; even my current choice.
The numbers always sound good but its always the "over 10 years" nonsense.

No actual plan, how to get it passed or what the economic impact will be on the overall economy.

Sock it to the top half and free programs for the bottom half is not actual policy. People want actual policy details.

Senator Warren has actual workable plans so do Beto O'Rourke, Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg.

FDR left a lot of unfinished business for future generations to carry out. Each candidate is building on his legacy in his or her own way.

And the struggle will continue long after 2020.
