Democratic Primaries

Civil rights icon John Lewis weighed in to defend Democratic presidential front-runner Joe Biden, who is mired in a controversy involving comments he made about working cooperatively with segregationist senators in the 1970s.
Lewis, a House Democrat from Georgia and a sought-after endorsement in the race for the 2020 nomination, told reporters Friday that he was not offended by Bidens remarks about the civility he was able to maintain with southern Democrats who backed segregation.
I dont think the remarks are offensive, Lewis said outside the U.S. Capitol. At the height of the civil rights movement, we worked with people and got to know people that were members of the Klan. People who opposed us, even people who beat us, arrested us and jailed us. We never gave up on our fellow human beings.

(8,144 posts)one person to another in a whisper, after multiple renderings, is completely altered.
Here, although the article makes clear that Lewis got Bidens meaning, its title
repeats an outright untruth based on second and third-hand garbled messaging.

The man who KNOWS offensiveness, first hand, defends Biden<snip>
"I should think this would properly thwart the cheap, calculated, insincere attacks on Joe Biden's nonexistent, "segregationist-friendly" comments but it won't.
I don't think the remarks are offensive. During the height of the civil rights movement we worked with people and got to know people that were members of the Klan We never gave up on our fellow human being.
Rep. John Lewis, who knows real offensiveness, especially when it clubs him over the head.
The even better news for those who want a Democrat to win in 2020 is that if Biden's opponents have only cheap, calculated, insincere criticisms of the man rather than substantive, thoughtful rebukes then Biden will skate to the nomination. That judgment is also based on a belief in the basic intelligence of most Democratic primary voters."
