Related: About this forumCornel West Endorses Sanders:
My Dear Brother Bernie Stands Shoulders Above Any Of The Other Candidates
(snip)
West, who endorsed Sanders in 2016 and campaigned for him, explained that the Vermont senator fulfils Martin Luther King-like criteria when it comes to issues of race, war, materialism, and poverty.
And this is the first time Ive had a chance to publicly endorse him again, but yes, indeed. Ill be in his corner that were going to win this time, he said, adding, my dear brother Bernie stands shoulders above any of the other candidates running in the Democratic primary when it comes to that Martin Luther King-like standards or criteria.
In 2016 Sanders was facing two major issues: The Clinton machine and lack of name recognition. Since then, African Americans have had the chance to discover who Bernie Sanders really is, according to the philosopher, and this is now reflected in the polls.
Theyve seen the genuine conviction and commitment that he has against racism, West said.
(snip)
The core is ensuring that theres fundamental transformation in the racist system under which we live so that the lives of black and brown and yellow peoples are much better, he said.

"So when many of us said we have to fight against racism, what were we told? 'No, he can't deal with racism because he has other issues, political calculations. Cornel West's Continuing Feud with Barack Obama
"Black puppet" and "black mascot" are in keeping with West's anthology of insults
snip
According to West himself, President Obama betrayed him on two counts after his election. The first was personal. It all started with a mix-up over inauguration tickets. Obama became increasingly hard to track down after his election but came through with a ticket for West. Tickets for West's mother and brother were nowhere to be found, and the three ended up watching the event from their hotel room. West told Hedges:
What it said to me on a personal level was that brother Barack Obama had no sense of gratitude, no sense of loyalty, no sense of even courtesy, [no] sense of decency, just to say thank you. Is this the kind of manipulative, Machiavellian orientation we ought to get used to? That was on a personal level.
https://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2011/05/cornel-wests-continuing-feud-barack-obama/350794/
'The president was hard to track down after his election.' I know, he hadn't been sworn in yet, but could CW put his hurt feelings about tickets aside and see something other than himself? We were on the brink of a great depression. Pretty sure Obama was prepping before he took office.

Is far different than welcoming in converts that change and evolve. My Senator Warren proves that point and changed parties in her 40's. She has proven to be a solid Democrat and a true leader in our party. I have met and talked with her, she is awesome.
44. Sure it does, DU welcomes pretty much anyone so long as they promote the Democratic Party.

I'm guessing you meant to say 'Never said we "shouldn't" accept converts.'
As to your question.
Is it an isolated case or a large number of voters?
What is or are the motivations for Democrat (s) to be so disaffected as to vote third party?
Either the person changes, the party does or a little of both depending on all manner of circumstances.
In the case of 2016 the Democratic Party changed, I believe for the better but there is no quick or easy answer to your question.
In the case of Cornell West; he is endorsing Democrat Bernie Sanders for President.

ESPECIALLY when that persona was a well-known, vocal supporter of Sanders, who then vocally supported "not Clinton" at a time it was crucial to defeat Trump.
(I will agree that in a non-swing state, a vote for third party was NOT the same as a vote for Trump. It's not the vote here, it's the vocal support that matters, the vocal rejection of Clinton as the anti-Trump that we needed.)
The damage Trump has done is irreparable, at least for a very long time, and in some cases forever.
West's endorsement should be considered poison. He needs to go away. If anything, speak out about how deluded and tragically wrong he was in 2016 (then still shut up about presidential politics, he has no credibility there).

(58,426 posts)In 1970, at age 17, West entered Harvard University on a scholarship. He graduated magna cum laude three years later with a bachelors degree in Middle Eastern languages and literature. He attended graduate school in philosophy at Princeton University, where he was influenced by the American pragmatist philosopher Richard Rorty. (West briefly abandoned work on his dissertation to write a novel, which was never published.) After receiving his doctoral degree in 1980, West taught philosophy, religion, and African American studies at several colleges and universities, including Union Theological Seminary, Yale University (including the Yale Divinity School), the University of Paris, Princeton University, and Harvard University, where he was appointed Alphonse Fletcher, Jr., University Professor in 1998. He returned to Princeton in 2002 as Class of 1943 University Professor in the Center for African American Studies.
Wests work was characteristically wide-ranging, eclectic, original, and provocative. His several books analyzing issues of race, class, and justice or tracing the history of philosophy typically combined a political perspective based on democratic socialism (see social democracy), a Christian moral sensibility, and a philosophical orientation informed by the tradition of American pragmatism. His best-known work, Race Matters, a collection of essays, was published exactly one year after the start of riots in Los Angeles that were sparked by the acquittal of four white policemen on charges of aggravated assault in the beating of Rodney King, an African American motorist. The book discussed the pervasive despair and nihilism of African Americans in poverty and criticized African American leaders for pursuing strategies that West believed were shortsighted, narrow-minded, or self-serving. West also considered issues such as black-Jewish relations, the renewed popularity of Malcolm X, and the significance of the Los Angeles riots themselves.
West was always a political activist as well as an academic, and he did not hesitate to participate in demonstrations or to lend his name or presence to causes he felt were just. At times his activism created tensions with the administrations of the universities where he taught. In 2001 the new Harvard University president, Lawrence Summers, reportedly admonished West in private for devoting too much time to political activity and other extracurricular pursuits. Their dispute was soon joined by supporters and detractors of West both inside and outside the academy, who debated not only the merits of Wests scholarship but also the commitment of Summers and Harvard to affirmative action programs. Eventually West resigned his position at Harvard and moved to Princeton.
Wests other works include The American Evasion of Philosophy: A Genealogy of Pragmatism (1989), The Ethical Dimensions of Marxist Thought (1991), Beyond Eurocentrism and Multiculturalism (1993), Democracy Matters: Winning the Fight Against Imperialism (2004), and (with David Ritz) Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud: A Memoir (2009). He also recorded a hip-hop-like spoken-word album, Sketches of My Culture (2001), and a collection of spoken-word and music, Never Forget: A Journey of Revelations (2007). In 2003 he appeared as the character Councillor West in the popular movies The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions.

(145,619 posts)I will never forgive nader Rove funded Nader in 2000 and 2004 http://www.huffingtonpost.com/eric-zuesse/ralph-nader-was-indispens_b_4235065.html
Furthermore, Karl Rove and the Republican Party knew this, and so they nurtured and crucially assisted Naders campaigns, both in 2000 and in 2004. On 27 October 2000, the APs Laura Meckler headlined GOP Group To Air Pro-Nader TV Ads. She opened: Hoping to boost Ralph Nader in states where he is threatening to hurt Al Gore, a Republican group is launching TV ads featuring Nader attacking the vice president [Mr. Gore]. ... Al Gore is suffering from election year delusion if he thinks his record on the environment is anything to be proud of, Nader says [in the commercial]. An announcer interjects: Whats Al Gores real record? Nader says: Eight years of principles betrayed and promises broken. Mecklers report continued: A spokeswoman for the Green Party nominee said that his campaign had no control over what other organizations do with Naders speeches. Bushs people - the group sponsoring this particular ad happened to be the Republican Leadership Council - knew exactly what they were doing, even though the liberal suckers who voted so carelessly for Ralph Nader obviously did not. Anyone who drives a car the way those liberal fools voted, faces charges of criminal negligence, at the very least. But this time, the entire nation crashed as a result; not merely a single car.....
On July 9th, the San Francisco Chronicle headlined GOP Doners Funding Nader: Bush Supporters Give Independents Bid a Financial Lift, and reported that the Nader campaign has received a recent windfall of contributions from deep-pocketed Republicans with a history of big contributions to the party, according to an analysis of federal records. Perhaps these contributors were Ambassador Egans other friends. Mr. Egans wife was now listed among the Nader contributors. Another listed was Nijad Fares, a Houston businessman, who donated $200,000 to the Bush inaugural committee and who donated $2,000 each to the Nader effort and the Bush campaign this year. Furthermore, Ari Berman reported 7 October 2004 at the Nation, under Swift Boat Veterans for Nader, that some major right-wing funders of a Republican smear campaign against Senator John Kerrys Vietnam service contributed also $13,500 to the Nader campaign, and that the Republican Party of Michigan gathered ninety percent of Naders signatures in their state (90%!) to place Nader on the ballot so Bush could win that swing states 17 electoral votes. Clearly, the word had gone out to Bushs big contributors: Help Ralphie boy! In fact, on 15 September 2005, John DiStaso of the Manchester Union-Leader, reported that, A year ago, as the Presidential general election campaign raged in battleground state New Hampshire, consumer advocate Ralph Nader found his way onto the ballot, with the help of veteran Republican strategist David Carney and the Carney-owned Norway Hill Associates consulting firm.
It was obvious, based upon the 2000 election results, that a dollar contributed to Nader in the 2004 contest would probably be a more effective way to achieve a Bush win against Kerry in the U.S. Presidential election than were perhaps even ten dollars contributed to Bush. This was a way of peeling crucial votes off from Bushs real opponent - votes that otherwise would have gone to the Democrat. Thats why the smartest Republican money in the 2004 Presidential election was actually going to Nader, even more so than to Bush himself: these indirect Bush contributions provided by far the biggest bang for the right-wing buck.

In the wake of Clintons close Nevada win, Crossroads claimed credit for driving her numbers down in favor of Sanders.
[Karl Roves] American Crossroads and Bernie Sanders helped Nevada caucus-goers see right through Hillary Clintons manufactured zeal on immigration reform after spewing virulent Trump-like rhetoricand that one-two punch shaved Clintons 50-point lead a year ago to a slim, single digit win, Steven Law, Crossroads CEO and president, said in a statement.
Crossroads is one of several [Republican] groups that has released ads that have been aimed at branding Sanders as the only true progressive in the racea strategy the Vermont senators campaign also embraces.

Head of nurses union 'counting on' Trump for single-payer system
By CARLA MARINUCCI 01/05/2017 10:04 PM EST
OAKLAND As Washington grapples with health care policy again, the head of the 185,000-member National Nurses United is turning her attention to a seemingly unlikely advocate for a single-payer system. "The one Im counting on the most is Trump, RoseAnn DeMoro said,
DeMoro, who serves as executive director of both the Oakland-based National Nurses United and the California Nurses Association, told POLITICO California on Thursday that she is disgusted with Democrats like House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and believes that the president-elect may actually get action.
Hes a businessman, he has an international perspective and his wife comes from a country where they have single payer, said DeMoro, who also is an AFL-CIO national vice president and executive board member. I think that Donald Trump is not about either party; hes about something very different. Hes the one who can actually rise above this and do whats right, and he knows as a businessman, its the most cost effective, she said.
And, she noted, Trump already has signaled to GOP party leaders that hes willing to buck them on issues like ethics and the TransPacific Partnership.

It doesn't have to be overt. The president is right about that.
But too many black people are niggerized. I would say the first black president has become the first niggerized black president.
CNN ANCHOR: What do you mean by that?
WEST: A niggerized black person is a black person who is afraid and scared and intimidated when it comes to putting a spotlight on white supremacy and fighting against white supremacy. So when many of us said we have to fight against racism, what were we told? 'No, he can't deal with racism because he has other issues, political calculations. He's the president of all America, not just black America.' We know he's president of all America but white supremacy is American as cherry pie.
We're talking about moral issues, spiritual issues, emotional issues. White supremacy has nothing to do with just skin pigmentation, it has to be what kind of person you want to be, what kind of nation we want to be. Democrats and Republicans play on both of those parties in terms of running away from the vicious legacy of white supremacy until it hits us hard. Thank God for Ferguson. They had to drag him out of the civil rights movement back in '63. Other Dems are running as progressives as well. I like them too, but I think out of the Group Bernie is the most immune to being bought out by Wall Street and Corporate Lobbyists.

In his late-20s, he returned to Harvard as a W. E. B. Du Bois Fellow before becoming an assistant professor at Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York. In 1984, he went to Yale Divinity School in what eventually became a joint appointment in American studies. While at Yale, he participated in campus protests for a clerical labor union and divestment from apartheid South Africa. One of the protests resulted in his being arrested and jailed. As punishment, the university administration canceled his leave for the spring term in 1987, leading him to commute from Yale in New Haven, Connecticut, where he was teaching two classes, across the Atlantic Ocean to the University of Paris.[14]
He then returned to Union Theological Seminary for one year before going to Princeton to become a professor of religion and director of the Program in African-American Studies from 1988 to 1994.[14] After Princeton, he accepted an appointment as professor of African-American studies at Harvard University, with a joint appointment at the Harvard Divinity School.[34] West taught one of the university's most popular courses, an introductory class on African-American studies.[35] In 1998, he was appointed the first Alphonse Fletcher University Professor.[36] West utilized this new position to teach in not only African-American studies, but also in divinity, religion, and philosophy.[34] West left Harvard after a widely publicized[37] dispute with then-President Lawrence Summers in 2002.[38] That year, West returned to Princeton, where he helped create "one of the worlds leading centers for African-American studies" according to Shirley Tilghman, Princeton's president in 2011.[39] In 2012, West left Princeton and returned to the institution where he began his teaching career, Union Theological Seminary.[40] His departure from Princeton, unlike his departure from Harvard, was quite amicable. As of 2017, he continues to teach occasional courses at Princeton in an emeritus capacity as the Class of 1943 University Professor in the Center for African American Studies.[41][39]
The recipient of more than 20 honorary degrees and an American Book Award,[13] he has written or contributed to over twenty published books. West is a long-time member of the Democratic Socialists of America, for which he now serves as an honorary chair.[14] He is also a co-founder of the Network of Spiritual Progressives.[42] West is on the advisory board of the International Bridges to Justice.[43]
In 2008, he received a special recognition from the World Cultural Council.[44]

(28,270 posts)These corporate PACs dont give millions of dollars to candidates for the hell of it.
They expect the politicians to return the favor with legislation favorable to their interests.
And thats exactly what they get.
Bernie gets all his money from regular citizens like me. And if he gains the office he will pay me and millions of others voters back instead of Big Pharma and the health insurance industry just to name two.

(32,640 posts)Senator Sanders has certainly endorsed candidates who got big donations from wealthy, out of state individual donors (not ordinary people), so clearly that's not something he thinks is a disqualifier in a candidate:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/virginia-politics/northam-has-financial-edge-in-virginia-governors-race-gillespie-leads-gop-field/2017/04/18/a44452f0-23a4-11e7-a1b3-faff0034e2de_story.html
Our Revolutions was set up with a 501(c)(4) status. That categorization meant it would be able to accept large contributions from anonymous donors. They are not legally compelled to be transparent as to where the money came from. It's helpful if the are, but as recent events have shown, some organizations double down when they are shown to have volunteered only as much transparency than the law requires.
As for Unions: Do you think that the United Mine Workers are going to donate to a candidate who promotes solar and wind? Do you think the UAW will support a candidate that wants to promote public transportation?
I have a hypothetical question for you concerning benefitting from PAC spending:
If candidate A was running against candidate B in a primary, and a dark money corporate PAC from the opposing party was running ads against candidate B in states where candidate A wasn't doing well, would you say that candidate A was benefitting from the spending the of the opposing party corporate PAC?

(28,270 posts)I'm going a different way in 2020.
No more half measures for me. I want real meaningful change for all Americans, not just the comfortable and well off.
I'm a USAF veteran in my 60's one sickness or accident away from total bankruptcy. No help from the VA for dental or any health issues at all, thanks for your service...sucker! I was told I make too much!!!
No help from the ACA either as I could not afford even the lowest bronze package on the exchange because the damn republicans in this redstate I try to survive in made damn sure no help was extended to people like me.
So the ACA made an outlaw out of me that got fined hundreds of dollars at tax time that I can ill afford. No one extended any hope to a person like me at all till Bernie Sanders who has advocated programs that will help me and my loved ones immensely if he gets the chance to implement them.
I see people here everyday with GOP talking points...we can't afford that...IOW shut up go bankrupt and die fool. That's not going to resonate very much with the present electorate IMO. Many candidates are mouthing the words but Sanders has been pushing these programs for years, when it wasn't popular so I trust him alone.
That's why I'm all in for Bernie.
Of course in the end I'm voting for the democratic nominee. We will see what develops....

(297,733 posts)I want a Democratic Candidate who can intelligently make their case with out tearing their "opponents" down.
BS was out there on TV after the "election" calling my Democratic Party "Elite" and how "humiliated" he was. Making it all about himself.' Calling our Democratic African American Base "Elite" and "Weak" Yeah, BS always has the insults.
And, insulting his "opponents"..
After the 2016 election, Sanders hit a similar theme when he told a crowd of supporters Its not good enough for somebody to say hey Im a Latina vote for me that is not good enough, and went on to add It is not good enough for somebody to say, Im a woman, vote for me.'

It isnt rocket science.
Voting is my civic duty, and there is no way in hell I would allow a Republican to win by petulantly making a protest vote if my primary choice isnt the nominee.
I will not throw the most vulnerable people in our society under the bus.
Ever.
I find it odd that you would act as if that is ok for primary supporters whose candidate isnt successful in gaining the nomination to help Republicans win.
Because I know you feel the same way about protecting the most vulnerable among us.
