In South Carolina, Voters Blame Media for Amplifying Biden's Missteps

<snip>

"Democrats in South Carolina may have over eight months to decide whom to vote for in 2020, but for now, there’s one thing that unites them: they think the media is relentlessly bullying Joe Biden.

“Propaganda’s going to always be around,” said Columbia resident Rev. Thurmond Guess, Sr. “If you give the devil a ride, he will drive.”

Guess Sr. was describing a sentiment that’s become increasingly common among the electorate here: at the very least, voters say, the political press is over-hyping Biden’s remarks this week, where he recalled working with prominent segregationists to get things done in the Senate. In interviews with nearly a dozen voters over two days, undecided and ardent supporters described a dizzying cycle where cable news buzz and print media headlines are sensationalizing the former vice president’s comments.

“They’re looking at any little thing to get the candidates to turn on each other,” said Elizabeth White, a Biden supporter from Aiken. “Any kind of headline to grab attention, they’re going to blow it up.”

“There’s too many news channels and they’ve got to have something to talk about,” added Geraldine Mogan, an undecided voter. “They make too big of it.”

But I think many people underestimate the pragmatism and the importance of history and respect to a great deal of the black community. Joe has done things that were careful at the time, and this is a time when vociferous people want to use that careful history against him rather than thinking that he actually was on the right side but didn’t perform perfectly.

I’m watching Mayor Pete do quite respectfully in the SB Town Hall and being criticized for not being emotional enough. If you’re on the battlefield you’re going to be a target.

I think I’m rambling...so much to process.

Joe's going to get hit where he's most vulnerable and has the most to lose, in this case, his relationship to the AA community and the perception of his electability, both of which are handily damaged by this latest word flip-out. Booker's role is regretable but if it wasn't him it would be someone else. And of course Sanders signs on, that's a given. So if Joe thought twice or thrice about getting into this I can understand why. It's not going to get any easier.

Buttigieg is facing what appears to be a long-standing out-of-control police corruption in a position where he has absolutely no room to maneuver, i.e. live TV, in the middle of a campaign. I don't know how he keeps the campaign going but if he temporarily suspends it he's ending on a high note and keeping his options open so I wish him luck.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

Especially Joy Reid, Rev. Al and the hosts on MSNBC!

Joy talked to Kamala Harris all the way through Elizabeth Warren. She id the same with others.

At least Al cut away to the speeches but then allowed Booker to accuse again. After having Biden on he allowed his guests to spew hate on Biden.

They are really doing damage to the party they claim to back with thi fovoritism. Had to keep it on because that was the only station that carried it, but finished my book while waiting. I was able to watch Elizabeth because a nice poster here showed her.
