Bernie Sanders refuses to call U.S. 'temporary shelters,' 'concentration camps'

?

Amid Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's contentious use of the words "concentration camp," when speaking about detained children at the southern border of the US, presidential candidate Bernie Sanders categorically rejected the term in an interview with CNN on Wednesday.

'No I have not used that word," Sanders said in the interview. "I didn’t use that terminology. And again, I have a lot of respect for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez; she's doing a fantastic job," Sanders said. "But what I will tell you is that we are locking up children in deplorable conditions and we are keeping kids there for weeks in places that are not meant for kids.

Speaking to her followers on Instagram on Monday, Ocasio-Cortez said that the “United States is running concentration camps on our southern border.”

“That is exactly what they are: they are concentration camps and if that doesn’t bother you, then [I don’t know],” she said as she gestured, adding that she was speaking to those who “are concerned enough with humanity to say that ‘Never Again’ means something and... that concentration camps are now an institutionalized practice in the Home of the Free [United States].”

It's like the word "holocaust." Technically it's mass death caused by a nuclear fire.

But words change, and that word changed forever after the Second World War. The same can be said of "concentration camp," which also forever changed its meaning after World War II.

"Ground zero" is an epicenter of a nuclear explosion. That term changed meanings for Americans after 9/11/01.

Some individuals who are suppose to be attuned to the sensitivities of people (so, not Republicans), really should be able to understand this already, and realize they made a mistake by using the term "concentration camp."

I am 100% behind AOC in this matter because her statements are factual and draw an important new light to a man-made crisis at the border which is driven by racist policies and proudly overt racism.

However, as AOC herself has said, we shouldn't get too caught up in the nomenclature. The term "Concentration Camps" is accurate but, if could close the camps just as fast by referring to them by another name, which draws similar attention, I'd have no objection, especially if the messenger had Holocaust survivors and victims in his family.
