Here's why Kamala was right to bring up her experience of being bused in Berkeley,

even though it wasn't Federally ordered busing.

School districts like Berkeley -- and my own district -- voluntarily redrew their attendance lines, and set up busing -- in order to AVOID a Federal mandate happening in the future. So the Federally ordered busing had effects far beyond those directly ordered to desegregate.

If Brown v Education had not happened, and the subsequent Federal orders for desegregation, it is highly unlikely that the many districts that decided VOLUNTARILY to reorganize their schools and busing patterns around racial equity lines would have done so.
