Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumAnd the winning issue is......
Not race. It is health care. Can we get more health care threads in the Democratic Primary section of DU? As in
Republican states that did not accept the Medicaid expansion are committing genocide against their own rural voters, and we need Democratic candidates in town halls in these rural red areas highlighting the issue and showing that Democrats are really determined to end the pain of rural America. Trump's so called rural "base"--the folks that vote for him because he claims to care about them even though he does not do shit for them---would turn to the Democrats in a heartbeat if the Democrats would actually talk about them. Give their misery a face. Sort of like these old Works Projects photos from the Depression gave them a face.

I always bring this up when arguing with people about health care.
Our technology is top notch. Our doctors and nurses also top notch. The problem is with access and the fact that a capitalist health care system has to create scarcity.
There are many reasons the costs are out of control. One of course is the greed of the pharmaceutical industry - this should be addressed first. The pills are just too expensive and it is absolutely not necessary.
Other reasons include our behavior - well, some of us. We eat too much and we tend to eat poorly. This leads to chronic health problems that other countries don't have nearly as much of. I don't know how to deal with this problem without being perceived as taking freedom away from the individual. Very, very tough sell.

(31,204 posts)Bill Maher mentioned this on his 9-28-19 show. Accountability works both ways. But that aside, the profit incentive in both pharmaceuticals and insurance industries is out-of-control crazy and not sustainable. We needed a capitalist formula for these industrires to grow in the 20th century, but it's turned them into monsters today. Utilities too.

systemic racism, poverty, the war economy, ecological devastation and the nations distorted morality.
The biggest thing I walked away from the debates thinking was the Dems needed better messaging on their healthcare policy and immigration policy. That to me was bigger than the Kamala/Biden issue even though I liked her approach.
The messaging of their healthcare plans matter. They are letting Trump and the Repubs- message their message. Not a good look. See what Trump did with the Mueller report. Even people here on DU are confused as to what Medicaid 4 all would mean.
If they can speak to all Americans - Rural and people in poor neighborhoods of all ethnicities and get them to register to vote - we have a really good chance of beating Trump. Black people are also tired of getting left behind. We often talk about black people being for democrats. True, but A LOT OF BLACKS DO NOT VOTE PERIOD!!! - They feel like they are always get the shitty end of the stick. That was what was remarkable about Stacy Abrahams did in Georgia. She left no stone unturned and nearly turned Georgia blue. Well I happened to think she did and we lost due to voter suppression.
