I drive from Goldsboro NC to Raleigh NC about once a week or so

and often stop for a soda on the way back and forth. I don't recall how many years ago it was that this happened but it can't have been more than 5 or so since I have only been in Goldsboro for about that long. I stopped for gas on my way back home from chorus (I sing in a gay men's chorus) and what was clearly a gay male was paying for his purchase. After he left the store, the clerk made fun of him to another person in my presence. Now I did say something. But I am a gay male, the person who made fun of him was a female, so it was a little easier for me. But clearly they felt that it would pass unnoticed. If Biden was so out of order, just why did people like them think they could get by with it?

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

from such things ceasing to happen. It wasn't so long ago that "some parts of the country" were actually most of the country. Much has changed in the past 5 years, as Joe Biden pointed out.

on the west coast in Seattle and LA who have become very insular forget there are different places and cultures in the US. It's especially ironic since they come from the east. Our democracy is at risk, we're in serious times now and useless distractions and divisions aren't welcome. Glad you spoke up about the incident.

I’ve been in Seattle more than thirty years. I came up from the Gulf Coast by way of several years in NC where my in laws still are.

Bless Seattle’s heart, it’s got a very liberal self image. And in fact it is very liberal. It can also be terribly blind to its faults. I think the protests were probably fairly accurate if you hang out in some areas and ignore a few things but Joe and certainly staff was ham handed in not reading up on the prevailing self image. He could well have spoken about the actual gay bashings that have happened in recent months. At least they’d be hard to deny.

Seattle is funny. At least in the South people talk about the problems. Here they don’t grapple very much, and sometimes that’s the real problem.

Biden "out of order"? About what.

BTW, I have lived in Goldsboro for the past 3 years, migrating from NJ and so far I have heard less bigoted remarks from people around here than I did in NJ.

What made it obvious this person was gay. Was he “lisping?” Limp wrist? (Sarcasm for those who need the hint).

Just what stereotype did you and the others in the store latch onto to decide this person was gay?

I was born and grew up in NC; oddly never had that experience in that sort of situation.

What was your comment when you “said something?” Sounds like a really cool story.

The man who got talked about made his purchase and paid for it. He was dressed in clothing that is more flamboyant that males tend to wear and his mannerisms were more effete than most men. He left. After he left the woman behind the counter said to another employee it is one of those people. I was getting a soda and some candy, went to pay for it and was asked how I was. I said fine I am on my way to my weekly chorus rehearsal with the Triangle Gay Men's chorus. A great group of guys to sing with. As she got very red and started stammering, I said, my sister used to work in customer service type jobs so I know if I called your corporate offices I would get you in big trouble. I won't do so this time. See you next week, I guess.
