He might be better off running for Congress in the district that includes South Bend.

I'm used to a state where the Congressional districts tend to be nice, even shapes without weird angles and cutouts. Maybe Mayor Pete would like to move to Minnesota, where he could get elected to damn near anything (except in CD 6, Michele Bachman's old district, which is like an open-air lunatic asylum). We'd be happy to have him.

His roots go deep there. He and Chasten own their home which is near his childhood home.

Who knows what the future holds?

However, running for any high-ranking office in red Indiana and winning is a very long shot.

I think he did well running for mayor of South Ben because he was born there, grew up there and they know him.

The citizens of SB don't care about his sexuality; they see that he can get things done and they like that.

He's not well known state-wide.

It would be a tough race.

I thank god he's a democrat. Seriously. Even Mayor Pete is probably a bit amazed. In this political climate we're gonna see a bunch of ambushes. It might not be correct, but it's politics.

Got a while to go. I'm gonna help fund him until he's gone, He's a smart young man, let him learn how to fight it out.

Personally, how I wish he move here to Kentucky and go against McConnell. You have no idea how I wish we had someone like him here.

Indiana has had Democratic governors, most recently Evan Bayh and Frank O'Bannon. Pete is from NORTHERN indiana, which is the real problem, LOL. Southern Indiana is pretty provincial, and O'Bannon (who was from there) didn't bother them, and Bayh of course was the son of our St Birch, but a real northerner, who knows.

But it's not unreachable. John Gregg, the last Dem candidate, got almost 46% of the vote when the state went big for Trump.
But I'd say Pete should run for Congress, then senator, get to Washington, be like Obama.

Unless something has changed, then no.

It was ridiculous how right wing it was. Even Democratic Senator Evan Bayh was right wing. The Republican Senator, Richard Lugar was to the left of him.

in South Bend. It's the bluest part of the state including Gary and anything close to Chicago. The rest of the state further south is trumper area and rightly so. It's downright hillbilly every where else including Indy which is a 3 hr drive from South Bend. (I say hillbilly affectionately and with disgust because my Mother came from the south). Those racist bible thumpers are the worst. Remember, the KKK grand dragon lived just outside of South Bend. This is why I haven't wanted to live there in decades and finally escaped.

It's not Republican. The mayor is a Democrat. Even the GOP mayors have been moderate.

Indiana went for Obama in 2008. It truly is about getting out the urban vote. If all the cities get out the vote, it overwhelms the neanderthals.

Don't count Indy out. Pence's RFRA hate-gay bill crashed and burned because Indy makes a whole lot of $ on conventions, and has a high percentage of LGBTQ-friendlies, and just overwhelmed the whole fundie crowd. It takes a lot to get mellow Indy types riled, but they'll turn out.

When Obama won in 2008, it wasn't because of the Chicago 'burbs like Gary in northwestern Indiana...it was the indianapolis 'butbs where Obama found the votes that put him over the topped...I don't know whether Pete can duplicate that.

Anything is possible...but offhand, I would say no....not for a statewide office

The world knows him. He has a lot to offer. Would love to see him help out the Dems in Indiana. Indiana is a red state, but they've had a history of electing Dems to the Senate (Bayh/Donnelly). I think one of the rookie GOP senators is up for re-election in 2022.
